OBJECTIVES Define the term “resources”; Differentiate between renewable and non- renewable resources; Explain what is meant by economic activities and the three categories. What are three things that I can’t live without? What is a resource? A resource is any material that man finds useful in his environment. RESOURCES Types of Natural Resources HMMMM.... What do you think non-renewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource? NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone! COAL AND PETROLEUM Coal and petroleum are considered nonrenewable because they cannot be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels. HMMMM.... If non-renewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources? RENEWABLE RESOURCES These resources are capable of serving man’s needs for as long as needed if adequate care is taken.. Sun Sea Forest Agricultural Crops and Animals SOLAR Energy from the sun. At the end of the activity, trade takes place and income, and value are added. Primary Economic Activity Primary/Extractive economic activity: This activity makes direct use of the earth’s raw materials and natural resources. Materials are transformed from one state to another and this is also referred to as manufacturing. E.g. Bauxite – alumina or banana – banana chips Secondary Economic Activity Tertiary Economic Activity This involves providing services rather than producing a tangible product. E.g., tourism, banking and transportation. Tertiary Economic Activity Map-work Activity (Page 42- Atlas) Use the economic maps of Jamaica in your atlas to answer the following questions: 1.
