research methods in economics research methods in economics 1. research 2. literature 3. a scientific text 4. analytical framework 5. Presenting evidence 6. ideas 1-research 1. research 2. research process steps 3. effective research 4. Literature 5. final paper 1. Why do research Summarize what is known in a field Contribute to knowledge on a topic Solve a problem or puzzle Take a stance in a debate 1. What is a research Research is the creation of knowledge. To create knowledge, construct an argument, support it with evidence, and develop competing arguments. Over time, stronger arguments survive. 2. research process steps - Develop a research question - Review literature - Define the problem - Test hypothesis - Analyze and interpret results - Communicate findings. 3. effective research 1. What's the research topic? Choose a general area (unemployment, pollution, poverty). 2. What's the research question? Write a one-sentence question. 3. What's the research hypothesis? Provide a proposed answer to your question. 3. effective research (How to begin) Choose a broad topic and conduct a thorough literature review to identify existing research, gaps, and contradictions. Based on the gaps, select a research question. 4. literature(gaps in the literature) Each article will identify the research question and differentiate it from other research in the introduction. The conclusion of each article should acknowledge its weaknesses and suggest areas for further study. 5-Final paper structure of a paper: 1. - Introduction 2. Literature Review 3. Theoretical Framework 4. Empirical Analysis 5. Conclusions 6. Appendix (if any) 7. References 5-Final paper 1- Introduction Define general topic What research has been done on this already What are gaps in literature Define your specific research question How will you answer your question (method) Order of remaining paper 5-Final paper 2-Literature review and hypothesis What does previous research say about topic Each paragraph represents one study Each paragraph represents one theme Summarize gaps in literature What is your own hypothesis 6-Final paper 3- Theoretical framework Describe the theoretical foundations supporting your empirical analysis. Refer to mainstream contributions and, if possible, develop your own framework. 5-Final paper 4-Empirical Analysis Descriptive statistics Regression analysis Before and after Case studies Forecasting 5-Final paper 5-Conclusions Restate the hypothesis or research question Summarize your results Did you confirm your hypothesis Weaknesses of your study Areas for further study
