Penis External organ of the male reproductive system which can be divided into 3 parts: Root = proximal fixed part of the penis ○ Located in superficial perineal pouch ○ Contains 3 erectile tissue (2 crura and bulb) and 2 muscles (ischiocavernosus and bulbospongiosus) Body = free part of penis suspended from pubix symphysis ○ Composed of 3 cylinders of erectile tissue (2 corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum) Glans = most distal part of penis formed from distal expansion of corpus spongiosum ○ Contains external urethral orifice Penis Erectile Tissue Engorge with blood during sexual arousal to produce an erection Root: ○ Left and right crura (covered by paired ischiocavernosus muscles) ○ Bulb of penis (midline) Body ○ Left and right corpora cavernosa (form from left and right crura) separated by the septum of the penis ○ Corpus spongiosum (form from bulb of penis which lies ventrally) Glans ○ Corpus spongiosum expands distally to form the glans penis Penis Fascia Covers the erectile tissue of the penis Superficial fascia = Colles’ fascia (continuous with Scarpa’s fascia) Deep fascia = Buck’s fascia (continuous with deep perineal fascia) Tunica albuginea = capsule around each cavernous body and fused midline at the septum Ligaments Suspensory ligament = condensation of deep fascia connective erectile bodes to pubix symphysis Fundiform ligament = condensation of abdominal subcutaneous tissue running down linea alba surrounding penis like a sling ○ Attaches it ot the pubic symphysis Penis Neurovasculature Arterial supply = dorsal arteries of penis, deep arteries of penis, bulbourethral artery (branches of internal pudendal artery) Venous drainage ○ Deep dorsal vein of penis → prostatic venous plexus (cavernous spaces) ○ Superficial dorsal veins (skin and subcutaneous tissue) Innervation ○ Sensory + SNS = dorsal nerve of penis (pudendal nerve) ○ PNS = cavernous nerves (periprostatic plexus - responsible for erection)
