Total land area: 15, 875 km2 Total population: 6,398,628… and counting Province of Cebu Oldest City Largest City Queen City of the South 6 Must-See Historical Landmarks in Cebu 1. Magellan’s Cross “On March 16, 1521, when [the] Philippines was discovered by Magellan…” goes the opening line of a local folk song. Magellan’s Cross marked the beginning of two things: Spain’s colonization and Christianity in the country. The Cross is located conveniently next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. 2. Fort San Pedro Prided as the country’s oldest and smallest fort, Fuerte de San Pedro or more popularly known as Fort San Pedro. The Fort was converted into a museum that has Spanish artifacts, paintings, old photographs, and historical documents in it. 3. Cebu Heritage Monument It is an extravagant bronze tableau masterpiece by local artist Eduardo Castrillo and was constructed from July 1997 to December 2000. The monument is located in the Parian Plaza of Cebu’s Parian District. The Parian has historical merit of its own as the district was built exclusively to house Chinese merchants and their families in Cebu during the Spanish period. 4. Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House It is one of the oldest homes in the Philippines. The ancestral house was built by Don Juan Yap between 1675 and 1700 for his growing family: his wife Dona Maria Florido and their three children, Maria, Eleuterio, and Consolacion Inside, the 2-storey structure is adorned with beautiful pieces that will make you travel through time. The Ancestral House is currently under the supervision of Val Sandiego, the great-great-grandson of Dona Maria Yap-Sandiego and a great supporter of the heritage and the arts. 5. Museo de Sugbo Located a few blocks from the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House is the Museo de Sugbo. Museo de Sugbo, or the Cebu Provincial Museum, holds a unique history of its own. Designed by Domingo de Escondrillas (Cebu’s only architect at that time), the structure was built in 1871 as the Carcel de Cebu, or the provincial jail. 6. Mactan Shrine Built to commemorate Philippine’s first battle. The Lapu-Lapu Shrine has a 20-meter bronze statue of the Datu and is believed to be the exact spot where the battle occurred. Adjacent to the Lapu-Lapu Shrine is the Magellan Shrine which shelters the Magellan Monument and the Magellan Marker. Built in 1866, the Magellan Monument is a memorial tower that holds different inscriptions on each side, including Magellan’s name in Portuguese. On the other hand, the Magellan Marker is a panoramic painting of the Battle of Mactan that was placed in 1941. Bohol God’s Little Paradise Jewel of the Philippines BEST Bohol Tourist Spots 1. Visit the Chocolate Hills Bohol's claim to fame is the unique geological formation of over 1000 cone-shaped hills that change in color depending on the season – the Chocolate Hills. These giant mounds of chocolate-colored earth in the dry season turn green during the wet season. The hills are spread out on a 50-square kilometer land and vary in size. 2. Lounge at the Beaches of Panglao Island Panglao is one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines and is connected to the main Bohol island by bridges and can be traveled to by land vehicles. Explore Hinagdanan Cave The Hinagdanan Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in the Philippines, features a pool of clear water at the bottom. The word "hinagdanan" means laddered in Cebuano. 4. Go on a Bohol Loboc River Cruise Tour The scenic river that runs through multiple towns in Bohol is framed with lush tropical trees, perfect for winding down in the afternoon after your countryside tour. The most popular activity here is the Loboc River Cruise tour, where tourists board a floating restaurant. The boat cruise will drift along the serene 1.5km long river while you feast on a Filipino lunch buffet. 5. Visit the Historic Churches of Bohol Baclayon Church This is the oldest church in all of Asia Loboc Church Officially named the Church of San Pedro, this church is the second oldest in the province. Dauis Church Also known as Our Lady of the Assumption St. Augustine Church The locals know this church as Panglao Church. Cross a Bamboo Hanging Bridge The locals know it as Tigbao Hanging Bridge The Tigbao Hanging Bridge is located in Sevilla, Bohol. It's suspended 83 feet above the Loboc River and it’s the primary connection between two barangays in the town. 7. Plunge Into Bohol’s Waterfalls Mag-Aso Falls Twin Falls Camugao Falls Kawasan Falls Osmeña Day? In honor of the late Governor of Cebu and the 4th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Sergio Osmeña, Sr., September 9th is Osmeña Day, considered a Special non-working holiday in the whole province of Cebu and its component cities. On the death of President Manuel Quezon in 1943, Osmeña succeeded to the presidency and took his oath of office on the same day before Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson of the United States Supreme Court. Osmeña then retired to his home in Cebu, where he spent the remaining years of his life until his death on October 19th 1961.
