Refraction The bending of light Refraction The change of the direction of the light ray as it passes from one optical medium to another optical medium with different optical densities. Law of Refraction Law of Refraction Since the water is more dense than the air, the light rays bend in the water. This makes the pencil seem to bend as well. Light coming from the fish refracts (changes direction) when it hits the surface. A person above the water sees the apparent position of the fish closer to the surface than the real position of the fish. The stars twinkle in the night sky because of the effects of our atmosphere. When starlight enters our atmosphere it is affected by winds in the atmosphere and by areas with different temperatures and densities. This causes the light
