Objective structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) 2. Objective structured Practical Examination (OSPE) 3. Objective structured Technical Examination (OSTE) Reflection for Day 4 ==================== Description ----------- Today was Day 4 of the fourth Contact session of Batch-13 of the Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) Programme at Khyber Medical University Peshawar. Dr Humera Adeeb was our facilitator for the first session today. She shared her lecture and AMEE guide with the learners and asked the students to study it. She then asked the students to post their questions about the OSCE/OSPE/OSTE on Padlet.com. The lecture provided an overview of the different types of clinical examinations - Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), and Objective Structured Teaching Examination (OSTE). Learners studied the lecture in detail and shared their questions as advised. Subsequently, Dr Humera answered all the learners\' questions very comprehensively. She practically demonstrated the method of stations that need double time as compared to the remaining stations. Dr Humera explained the purpose of each examination and how they are used to assess various clinical skills in medical education. Finally, Dr Humera summarised the entire lecture and cleared the queries of the students. Feelings -------- I was very curious in today\'s sessions, as OSCE is becoming more common in assessments across examinations at different levels. I enjoyed the interactive discussion of the learners among themselves and with the facilitator. In the end, I was confident about my knowledge being updated about the process of compiling and composing OSCE, OSPE, and OSTE stations. Evaluation ---------- I evaluated my knowledge about these examination formats before and after the lecture. Today's session helped me gain a better grasp of the application of OSCE, OSPE and OSTE. Analysis -------- Upon reflection, I analyzed the benefits and challenges associated with each type of examination format. I also considered how they align with the learning objectives of medical education programs and how they can be tailored to assess specific clinical skills. Conclusion ---------- In conclusion, the lecture deepened my understanding of assessment methods in medical education and highlighted the importance of incorporating diverse evaluation techniques to assess students' clinical abilities comprehensively. Action Plan ----------- I aim to explore further resources related to OSPEs and OSTE to expand my knowledge base on these assessment methods. Additionally, I plan to engage in discussions with faculty members who have experience with these examinations to gain insights from their perspectives. From Group 1, Dr Khalid and Dr Najma presented their study of the curriculum of Pakistan Medical and Dental Counsel according to the Posner Model. Dr Usman Mehboob appreciated their effort. At the same time, he gave his precious feedback for further improvement. Following this, Dr Adnan presented his analysis, which was composed of hard work from the whole group. Dr. Najma from Group 3 presented her analysis, followed by Dr. Mohammad Zaib from Group 4. Dr Usman Mehboob was very meticulous in appreciating the correct analysis and giving suggestions about the mistakes. The second session of the day involved a detailed discussion on "Problem-based Learning." The worthy director of the Institute of Health Profession Education and Research, Dr Brekhna Jamil, was the facilitator for the session. She started the session by displaying a Problem-based Learning (PBL) Scenario and then asking the students to practice the whole process of PBL accordingly. During the scenario, Dr. Chandnee was assigned the role of the "chair," while Dr. Usama Zeb acted as the "scribe." The remaining students acted as members of the team. Students had a detailed discussion on the PBL session. After the session, Dr Brekhna discussed the mistakes of the students and gave corrective feedback as well. Subsequently, Dr Brekhna divided the students into four groups. She asked them to construct PBL scenarios for different topics. I presented my scenario before the other students. Dr. Brekhna Jamil shared an essential point: including learning outcomes from all the specialties for proper integration. All the students appreciated this feedback and its importance. Feelings -------- All sessions of the day involved interactive lectures and group activities. As a result, students felt comfortable and involved. Understanding the PBL process and preparation of the scenarios for PBL was very interesting. Evaluation ---------- Dr Usman Mehboob and Dr Brekhna Jamil are experts in the field of medical education. They ensured the smooth and effective flow of all the sessions of the day. They left no ambiguities in the minds of the students as far as the content of today's session is concerned. Analysis -------- **Both of the facilitators were excellent in describing the content of their relevant sessions. Keeping in mind the importance of PBL in an integrated curriculum, I have an opinion to discuss the PBL scenarios in the following sessions as well. Ultimately, this would help improve the students\' knowledge of PBL scenarios.** Conclusion ---------- Both topics of today are priceless in the field of medical education. Analysis of the curricula implemented in the medical institutions of Pakistan is the need of the day. It is advisable to point out the mistakes and correct them as early as possible. In a few situations, the entire curriculum might need replacement. Action Plan ----------- I shall try to analyze a few modules of final year MBBS available on the KMU website. This would help me in finding the possible mistakes and forwarding suggestions to KMU for improvement. I shall try to prepare a few scenarios for PBL and get them reviewed by my MHPE colleagues and possibly the worthy faculty of KMU.
