RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 1 (HANDOUTS) THE LOCAL CHURCH 1. The Relationship of the Church and NDDU. 1.1. The role of being a Marist in serving the Diocese of Marbel is to teach, promote, and apply the Catholic teachings to accomplish the VM and Thrust of the Diocese. 1.2. These would not be possible without the help of our community. 2. What is Diocese? 2.1. The group of churches that a bishop supervises. 2.2. Who is the current bishop of the Diocese of Marbel? 2.2.1.Bishop Cerilo “Alan” Uy Casicas 2.3. A diocese is divided into parishes that are each overseen by a priest. 3. CHURCH’S MISSION-VISION 3.1. VISION 3.1.1.A worshipping, witnessing, and serving Community of Disciples of Jesus Christ striving to become a Church of the poor in dialogue with life and faith of other culture. 3.2. MISSION 3.2.1.Integral Evangelization: To proclaim and witness to the Gospel of Salvation and liberation through Massive Education in the Faith, Solid Organizing, Enculturated, Contextualized Worship and Transformative Social Apostolate. 4. CORE VALUES 4.1. GOD-CENTERED (Maka-Diyos) 4.1.1.Putting God first and allowing all activity in life to flow from the premise that God’s priorities are the priorities of the individual. 4.2. DEMOCRATIC (Maka-Tao) 4.2.1.A person or a group that is democratic believes in, encourages, or supports freedom and equality between people and groups. 4.3. NATIONALISTIC (Maka-Bansa) 4.3.1.Being proud of your own country. 4.3.2.Someone who is nationalistic believes that their country is better than other countries. 4.4. JUST (Maka-Tarungan) 4.4.1.Not doing wrong to any. 4.4.2.Violating no right or obligation. An upright, righteous, honest, true. 4.5. RESPECTFUL OF HUMAN LIFE (Maka-Buhay) 4.5.1.Respect for the creative action of God. 4.5.2.Act of consciously accounting for life of other human beings in one action. 4.6. INTEGRITY OF CREATION (Maka-Kalikasan) 4.6.1.Integrity refers to the rational use of creation, a use that is respectful of its purpose and destiny and is mindful of the needs of future generations. 4.6.2.Creation calls for collaboration in an ongoing process and a contribution towards the realization of an unfinished potential. 1 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 1 (HANDOUTS) VISION, MISSION, and CORE VALUES NDDU 1. NDDU’s VISION AND MISSION 1.1. VISION 1.1.1.Notre Dame of Dadiangas University is a Catholic, Filipino Institution of Academic Excellence established by the Marist Brothers of the Schools (F.M.S. Fratres Maristae a Scholis) characterized by St. Marcellin Champagnat’s ideals of simplicity, humility and quiet zeal for God’s work. As inspired by the Blessed Virgin Mary, the school is dedicated to the formation of persons in all levels of learning, who, as Christian Leaders, Competent Professionals, Community-Oriented Citizens and Culture-sensitive Individuals will actively participate in building a peaceful and progressive nation. 1.2. MISSION As a Catholic Institution, NDDU shares in the Church’s mission of evangelization by integrating life and faith; As a Filipino Institution, NDDU seeks to preserve Filipino Culture and propagate love of country and its people; As an Institution of Quality Education, NDDU aims leadership in Curricular Programs, Multi-Disciplinary Programs, Research, and Community Service As a Marist Institution, NDDU promotes the core values of Family Spirit, Marian Spirit, Simplicity, Presence, Preference for the Least Favored, Love of Work, and Integrity of Creation; and As a Community-Oriented Institution, NDDU aims to respond to the challenges of the locality it is serving: (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani Province, and General Santos City). 2. CORE VALUES 2.1. Family Spirit 2.1.1.Champagnat's great hope was that people in the Brothers' schools would relate to one another as members of a loving family, Mary being our Mother. 2.2. Marian Spirit 2.2.1.In a Marist school, our model in following Jesus is Mary, whose virtues we try to live. 2.3. Simplicity 2.3.1.This value is about being real in our relationships, transparent and honest. It also should characterize our lifestyle and activities as we avoid excesses or luxuries. 2.4. Presence and Participation 2.4.1.Being present at classes and activities and taking an active part: these are Marist ways of getting to know others. 2.5. Preference for the Least Favored 2.5.1.Work with those on the margins of society was at the beginning of the Marist Brothers' Congregation. This spirit continues in Marist schools today. 2.6. Love of Work 2.6.1.We recognize the dignity of work, as it offers us purpose in life and self-fulfillment, as well as contributes to the well-being of family, community, and nation. 2.7. Integrity of Creation 2.7.1.Aware that humans and all living and non-living matter are creatures of our God, we care for our land and its resources, knowing that we are all interdependent. 2.8. Quality Education 2.8.1.Competent, Knowledgeable, Ethical. MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT 1. 1789-1800 1.1. When and where was St. Marcellin Champagnat born? 1.1.1.St. Marcellin, the 9th of 10 children, was born in the hamlet of Le Rosey, France on May 20, 1789. 1.2. Who were his parents? 1.2.1.Jean Baptiste Champagnat 1.2.2.Marie Therese Chirat Champagnat 1.3. When was he baptized and what was his complete name? 1.3.1.May 21, 1789 he was baptized at the parish in Marlhes, 1.3.2.Joseph Benedict Marcellin Champagnat 1.4. What was happening in France during the year of Marcellin's birth? 1.4.1.French Revolution 1.5. Who is the paternal aunt of Marcellin? 1.5.1.His aunt Louise Champagnat taught him how to read and write at his early years. 1.5.2.A religious sister, who lived with them at home because of the religious persecution that was going on. She prepared Marcellin for his First Communion. 2. 1801-1810 2.1. How was Marcellin's experience at school? 2.1.1.The teacher slapped a boy in front of all the children. 2.1.2.He was traumatized because of the corporal punishment shown by his teacher, he was discouraged so much 2.1.3.Marcellin refused to return there. He preferred to look after his sheep. 2.1.4.He decided to spend his time in the farm instead of going back to school. 2.1.5.From his father he learns the skills of a farmer. He succeeds in saving a little money from selling sheep. 2.2. How did Marcellin's journey to the priesthood start? 2.2.1.One day in 1803, a priest stopped at Champagnat’s family house and asked if any of the boys wanted to go to the seminary. All his older brothers said "no” while Marcellin replied otherwise. 2.3. How old was Marcellin when he entered the seminary? 2.3.1.Marcellin was 16 when he entered the seminary at Verrieres. He stood out from the rest because he was so tall and he was the oldest. He started behind his classmates in the seminary in terms of academics. He had to study long and hard to catch up with them. 3. 1811-1820 3.1. When was Marcellin ordained as a priest? 3.1.1.Marcellin was ordained a priest, along with fifty-two companions, on July 22, 1816 at the Cathedral of Lyons. 3.2. Where was his first assignment? 3.2.1.His first assignment as a priest at La Valla. 3.3. Who is Jean-Baptiste Montagne? 3.3.1.A dying boy who doesn’t know about God, Jesus and Mary. 3.3.2.Marcellin introduced to him God, and prayed him over. 3.3.3.He also spent his hours trying to instruct him the basic Christian beliefs so that Marcellin can give him the sacrament of confession. 3.4. The first two brothers. 3.4.1.January 2, 1817 3.4.2.Marcellin formed the first community of Marist Brothers with his first two recruits: 3.4.3. Br. Jean Marie Granjon and Br. Jean Baptiste Audras. 3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 1 (HANDOUTS) 4. 1821-1830 4.1. The Brothers spread to the rural areas of France. 4.2. On their way back from a visit, Fr. Champagnat and Br. Stanislaus lost in the snow. Helpless in their situation they prayed the Memorare. Then they saw a house at the hill. 5. 1831-1840 5.1. Ven. Br. Francois was elected as the first successor of St. Marcellin 5.2. The Brothers begun expanding all over the world. 5.3. St. Marcellin died on June 6, 1840 at the age of 51. 6.
