Learning goals for PHY 151 Quiz 3, Thursday, 23th January 2025 Ideal Gases I can create and interpret energy flow diagrams for a multi-step process that takes an ideal gas from one state to several other states, and I can relate the information in the energy flow diagram to the First Law of Thermodynamics and to a corresponding pV diagram. I can apply (e.g., perform calculations or use reasoning with) the ideal gas law and the First Law of Thermodynamics to the corresponding states and processes in a pV diagram and the associated energy flow diagram. I can use the information in a pV diagram to calculate the Work done on an ideal gas for a given process, and I can determine whether the Work done on the gas is positive, negative or zero. Phase Change, Specific Heat I can sketch a temperature vs. heat transfer (T vs. Q) graph for a substance that begins in one phase and ends as a mixture of two phases, and I can explain what is happening to the substance at different temperature regions of the graph. I can interpret and create a series of energy flow diagrams that shows a system that undergoes one or more heat transfer processes and that may involve a phase change. I can write the heat transfer expression that corresponds to each step in a series of energy flow diagrams involving heating or cooling of a (single) liquid or solid, and/or one or more phase changes. I can apply the concepts of specific heat for a single phase of matter and the heat of transformation for matter undergoing a phase change to calculate the amount of heat transfer to or from the matter in a given process.
