Subsistence Farming - grew enough to feed their own families Long cold winters, harsh weather, rocky soil Middle Colonies: Locate 4 Middle Colonies on a map: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware Mild weather, good fertile soil for farming Grew Cash Crops - a crop (not a huge tract of land) grown to sell ( wheat and corn). Known for mining iron Known as the Breadbasket colony (for wheat) and Sheep Colony (for sheep farming and selling wool) Southern Colonies: Locate 5 Southern Colonies on a map: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Long hot summers, mild winters, and good soil Known for plantations - A large farm with a lot of crops dedicated to growing and selling overseas for big profits (cotton and tobacco) Large farms used the largest amount of slave labor to tend to the crops Our New Jersey Colony: 1. One of the only colonies to let girls and boys go to school. 2. New Jersey had religious freedom. 3. Students went to school more than we do now. (250 days a year -only off holidays and weekends) We go 180. 4. Students went to school in one room school houses with all grade levels. 5. People wanted to live in NJ because it was between 2 cities Philadelphia and New York. They were able to travel to sell goods there within a day on a horse and buggy. 6. Was the most multicultural colony ( had French, German, Irish, Swedish, Scottish, and Dutch and of course English living there) 7. The first governor of New Jersey was William Livingston ( was part of the Continental Congress, he signed Constitution of U.S, and was a founding father)
