QUARTER I (Southeast Asian Music and Arts) Music What are Southeast Asia's contemporary and emerging music and arts? Both the music scenes in the Philippines and its neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, namely Malaysia and Indonesia, are vibrant and diverse. This is because the music and art forms in Southeast Asia reflect the people's long history and diverse cultures in the region. The art forms have developed in relation to Southeast Asian religious beliefs and practices. Understanding the art forms helps learners know more about the beliefs and religion, customs, and traditions of our friendly neighbors in Asia. Both contemporary music and art forms have grown to be more exciting emerging arts because of modern technology. Pop Music in the Philippines What is popular music? Originating from the US and UK, popular music or pop music consists of songs with a strong beat, simple but catchy tunes, lyrics that are easy to remember, and a repeated chorus. Technological inventions-from phonograph, microphone, and speaker to radio players, TV, and synthesizers--helped perform, record, play, edit, produce, and distribute the popular music that we now know today. Pop music speaks of relatable topics, especially to the youth, enabling it to spread globally fast. What is OPM? Original Pilipino Music (OPM refers to Philippine popular songs composed by Filipinos in the Philippines. It began with genres like rock and roll, disco, country, swing, funk, and a little jazz. Who were the popular artists during the '70s? These include singing Actors and actresses (Nora Aunor, Tirso Cruz I, Pilita Corales, and many others); jukebox kings and queens (Claire dela Fuente, or Emelda Papin, Rey Valera, and Freddie Aguilar, Ryan Cayabyab, Basil Valdez and many others): and groups (Boytrends, Holdog, VST & Co., Asin, and many others). What are theme songs? By definition, a theme song is played at the beginning and the end of a TV show or movie. Filipinos also use his term to refer to songs that couples dedicate to each other. They choose a song with lyrics that relate to their relationship. Today, we usually hear these during weddings. Who were the popular artists during the '80s? In the 1990s, if people wanted to sing their favorite pop tunes, they bought Song Hits--a musical magazine where top songs on the chart are featured, including their lyrics, chords, and artists. Jamming with friends was common with a pair of song hits and a guitar. What is tunog kalye? Music became even more accessible through portable CD players, which tagged '90s OPM as Tunog kalye. As the name suggests, these are music that you hear in the "streets" and have lyrics from everyday life. It started when a radio show showcased live performances of promising bands, which pushed alternative music and hip-hop to enter the mainstream. Bands used their electric guitars, drum sets, and keyboards, while rappers used electronic beats that emphasized rhythm and lyrics. What is P-pop? If there is J-pop and K-pop, otherwise known as Japanese pop and Korean pop, then there is P-pop or Pinoy pop. It is a contemporary pop music genre in the Philippines, a huge stem of OPM that continuously grows especially in the 2020s. It regularly showcases performances of live bands, such as the group G-Force Boys. A radio station, Wish FM 107.5, popularized the "Mix Bus" a small bus with a recording studio inside which stops at different locations in Metro Manila featuring both famed and rising stars through live performances. Pop Music in Other Southeast Asian Countries What is popular music in Indonesia? Pop music in Indonesia includes various pop genres influenced by the West. Like most other pop music in the world, many Indonesian films and TV dramas use Indonesian pop and rock music as their soundtracks. Indonesian pop or I-pop music also influenced the music culture in Southeast Asia, most especially Malaysian pop music, as its closest neighbor. What is popular music in Thailand? Thai pop or T-pop is Thailand's Western pop music equivalent. It mostly covers Thai rock, dance music, and rap, as well as disco, funk, and dance music. Before entering the mainstream, it started as pleng lukrung or "string music" due to its predominant use of string instruments. This was an influence of American RB and surf-rock music brought by American and Australian soldiers to Thailand during the Vietnam War What is popular music in Vietnam? The beginning of Vietnamese pop music was hugely influenced by the U.S. military presence which started during the Vietnam War. American soldiers were playing Western songs that the Vietnamese found new and interesting. What is mental health? Mental health includes the emotional, social, and psychological well-being of a person. It is how a person thinks, feels, and acts to cope with life's challenges. A person with good mental health functions comfortably in a society. Emotions play a big role in our thoughts and actions. When we are happy, tasks seem easier, and stress tends to fade. However, when we are sad, anxious, or worried, thinking clearly and completing a task seem difficult. Factors Affecting Mental Health No two individuals have the same mental health status. Even identical twins differ in their mental conditions. This is because there are different factors affecting one's mental health. Mental health is a result of the interplay of heredity, environment, background and personality, life experiences, and illnesses. Many factors contribute to the status of one's mental health and these are: 1. biological factors as attributed by inherited genes; 2. individual life experiences such as abuse, illnesses, Or trauma; and 3. family history of mental health problems Common Adolescents’ concerns that can affect mental health Mental distress is defined as feeling of being overwhelmed, sad, anxious or troubled. These feelings can have impact on thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Common concerns affect the mental health of adolescents Weight and body image Technostress Negative Peer Pressure The Contribution of Physical Activities to Good Mental Health Playing games is not only fun but also allow opportunities for a person to develop are skills and strategies. Decision-making and tactical thinking skills can be developed through playing games, especially those classified as "target games." Target Games Target games are physical activities in which players send an object toward a target while avoiding any obstacles. They can be played by individuals or by a team. Target games do not require quick decision-making. Thus, they are typically played at a slower pace, allowing players to concentrate on a technique and the execution of specialized skills in order to win the game. Target games require a lot of concentration. Quieting the mind and increasing awareness are manifestations of mental exercise. Playing target games helps in the development of relationships with people and objects. When players move with another player or with objects, they gain mastery of their body's movements that help level up their comfort, confidence, competence and proficiency. It is in this stage of movement mastery that players can improve their health status and are more likely to develop positive attitudes toward lifelong health habits and living. What are the classifications and examples of target games? Target games can be classified as opposed or unopposed 1. Opposed Target Game - In an opposed target game, a player can of target games as opposed obstruct the target by blocking, knocking away, and unopposed. These are games where the oppositions play affects the next move. These games include billiards, croquet, lawn bowls, arnis, taekwondo, boxing, fencing, pencak silat, wushu, muay thai, karetedo and sole fighting. 2. Unopposed Target Game - Are games that the outcome is not affected by what the opposition does. Example of these games are archery, darts, bowling and golf. ARNIS Arnis was developed by the indigenous populations of the Philippines, who used an assorted range of weaponry for combat and self-defense. Encompassing both simple impact and edged weapons, arnis traditionally involved rattan, swords, daggers, and spears. In 1521, equipped with nothing more than bladed weapons and their fearsome arnis abilities, Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s armored, musket-bearing Spanish conquistador forces when they tried to invade. 2 competitions in Arnis Anyo Event I is a dance artistic representation on how to fight. Tactical skills - pertaining to the understanding and application of strategies, plans, and decision-making during a game or activity. Hand-eye coordination - refers to the ability to synchronize visual perception with motor control specifically the coordination between the eyes and the hands. Focus - the ability to concentrate attention and direct it towards a specific task, objective or stimulus while filtering out distractions. Accuracy - the degree of correctness or closeness to the intended target or desired outcome Flexibility - when you have to block and defend an object, you react to an opponents attack or hit faster, which helps you win.
