# Stargazers To Get A Rare Chance To Witness A Nova Explosion **APRIL 11, 2024** An artist's concept of a nova explosion is shown. A nova explosion is a rare celestial event that can be observed from anywhere on Earth without using any special equipment, unlike a solar eclipse. ## What is a Nova? A nova occurs in binary star systems consisting of a red giant and a white dwarf. The red giant sheds material that accumulates on the surface of the white dwarf. This eventually leads to an explosion, known as a nova, which increases the brightness of the system suddenly. This phenomenon can typically only be observed with a powerful telescope. The upcoming T Coronae Borealis nova eruption, however, will be visible without aid. A diagram of the life cycle of a star is included, showing stages from Average Star, Red Giant, Planetary Nebula, Massive Star, Red Supergiant, Supernova, White Dwarf, Neutron Star, and Black Hole.
