10 ICT 10 Activity Sheet Quarter 3 | Week 1 Elements of Storytelling MARICAR R. PORNEL, Oton NHS ZALDY M. TONDO, Division Science Coordinator WRITERS Introductory \ Message Welcome to ICT 10! The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment. For learning facilitator: The ICT 10 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to- face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning. For the learner: The ICT 10 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule. Name of Learner:_______________________ Grade and Section:______________ School:_________________________________ Date: ___________________________ ICT 10 ACTIVITY SHEET Elements of Storytelling Learning Competency: Demonstrate understanding on the elements of storytelling. Support Competencies: 1. Explain what is storytelling. 2. Identify the elements of storytelling. Background information for the learners Video production is the process of creating video by capturing moving images (videography), and creating combinations and reductions of parts of this video in live production and post-production (video editing). Practically, video production is the art and service of creating content and delivering a finished video product. This can include production of television programs, television commercials, corporate videos, event videos, wedding videos and special-interest home videos. There are three stages of video production namely, pre-production, production and post production. Pre-production is everything that happens before you start shooting your feature film, TV series, animation, or anything else. It helps you get organised before you dive into the production process. In this lesson, you will learn about the elements of storytelling as we prepare for the first stage of video production process. Activity Proper. Activity 1. What is Storytelling? Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination. In summary, storytelling is/should: 1. be intereactive. 2. uses words 3. uses actions such as vocalization, physical movement and/ or gesture. 4. presents a plot. 5. encourages the active imagination of the listeners Elements of Storytelling 1. Plot Every story needs a beginning, middle, and end. Skillful stories typically have a straightforward plot, and yet also manage to surprise the reader with plot twists that create interest. The standard plot structure consists of five main elements: Exposition: Introduces the character and setting Rising Action: Something changes; the characters meet a challenge or crisis Climax: The turning point and most exciting part of a story Falling Action: Events that follow as a result of the climax Resolution (or Denouement): The end that occurs after a conflict is resolved and a character has changed Every story varies in its sequence of events and how long the character spends in various steps. That being said, the most successful stories keep the plot moving at a steady pace that leads to a satisfying resolution 2. Characters Complex and relatable characters are important to a good story. The writer can create these types of characters by understanding character types and character traits. Character types: Each of the types of characters in a story contributes to the plot, but in very different ways. Protagonist: The main character whose journey we follow throughout the story Antagonist: Sometimes known as the foil, the character whose goals come up against the protagonist's, leading to conflict Dynamic Character: A character who changes as a result of the events in the story Static Character: A character who does not change during the course of a story 3. Setting Where and when a story occurs can affect what characters do, how the plot unfolds, and whether the reader can connect with the author's choices. Consider the two main types of setting when writing or reading a short story. Backdrop Setting This type of setting can be the backdrop for almost any story. The time period and physical place don't affect the plot in a major way. Example: Most fairy tales take place in a distant kingdom during the Renaissance period. However, the themes of these stories do not depend on their backdrop. Integral Setting An integral setting is a time and/or place that directly affects the plot. Alternatively, the story depends on that setting as an integral element. Example: The characters in William Golding's Lord of the Flies create a society on a deserted island where their plane has crashed. 4. Conflict. Conflict is the driving force of a good story. No conflict, no story. But why is this the case? The answer lies in human nature. As humans we instinctively look for balance and harmony in our lives. So, as soon as harmony is disrupted we do whatever we can to restore it. When faced with a problem – a conflict – we instinctively seek to find a solution. Conflict forces us to act. As storytellers, we get our message across through conflict and its resolution. Example: The stepmother in Cinderella sabotages Cinderella's chance to attend the royal ball. 5. Theme. Once you identify a story's plot, setting, characters, and conflict, you can work on finding its theme. The theme is the story's "big idea" or underlying message about life. It can be one word that embodies what a story is trying to say or it can be a longer phrase. The theme of a story is not the same as its subject, which is the actual topic of the story. Example: The Harry Potter series is about a boy wizard at Hogwarts. However, its themes are friendship, bravery, and good vs. evil. Read the story and answer the questions below. The farmer and his three sons Old farmers had three sons. They were always quarreled with each other and that made the farmer unhappy. He tried to bring them to their senses but failed. Actually, they had no unity. At last, he designed a plan. One day he called all his sons and asked them to bring a bundle of sticks. The sons brought a bundle. When the bundle was brought, he asked the eldest son to break the bundle. The eldest son tried his level best but failed. Then the farmer asked his second sons to break the bundle. But he failed too. Similarly, the third son tried hard but did not succeed. The farmer then untied the bundle of the sticks and he told his sons to break the sticks one by one. His sons took the single stick and broke that very easily. Then the farmer said to his sons, “You see, my son, each of you broke one stick easily. But none of you could break the bundle of sticks. Why couldn’t you do it?” The eldest son replied, “That’s right,” You see the strength of unity my son.’ He said “You must live together and no one can harm you then.” After this the sons perceived the message of their parents and they lived in peach. The farmer became happy. After reading the story, identify the following elements of the story. 1. Plot: ____________________________________________________________ 2.
