Amores Special Science Teacher I Chemistry Unit – CID [email protected] Dalton’s Atomic Theory ▷ All substances are made of atoms. Atoms are the smallest particles of matter. They cannot be divided into smaller particles, created, or destroyed. ▷ All atoms of the same element are alike and have the same mass. Atoms of different elements are different and have different masses. ▷ Atoms join together to form compounds, and a given compound always consists of the same kinds of atoms in the same proportions. 2 Dalton’s Billiard Ball Model ▷ Proposed by John Dalton in 1803 ▷ groundwork for our understanding of the structure of matter and chemical reactions 3 Dalton’s Billiard Ball Model 1. Indivisible Spheres ▷ all matter consists of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms ▷ atoms were imagined as small, solid, and indivisible spheres 4 Dalton’s Billiard Ball Model 2. Different Elements ▷ each element is composed of its unique type of atom, and these atoms have specific characteristics that distinguish one element from another ▷ all atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties, but they are different from the atoms of other elements 5 Dalton’s Billiard Ball Model 3. Chemical Reactions ▷ chemical reactions occur when atoms combine, separate, or rearrange themselves in specific proportions ▷ chemical compounds are formed when atoms of different elements combine in fixed ratios, and these ratios are expressed through simple whole numbers 6 Dalton’s Billiard Ball Model 4.
