ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE PRACTICAL YEAR TRAINING PROGRAMME (PYTP) AND STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES). PRESENTED BY: AWE OLUWATOWOJU VERONICA 222231 DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FORESTRY FACULTY OF RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES January, 2025. SIWES AND PYTP  SIWES: SIWES's primary objective is to close the knowledge gap between academic study and real-world application. It improves students' abilities and helps them appreciate industry practices.  PYTP: 1. Provide students with practical, hands-on experience in their field of study. 2. The PYTP was launched in 1978 and later rebranded to reflect its focus on practical training. 3. The PYTP aims to empower students to become employers rather than simply seeking employment. PYTP ACTIVITIES  Practical Silviculture  Ecological Survey  Research Methodology  Forest Inventory and Management Planning and Forest Biometrics II  Elementary Ground Survey  Communication skills in RNR  Agroforesty Systems  Aerial Survey and Photogrammetry  Wood Harvesting and Utilization of Forest Produce  Zoo Management and Museum Techniques  Entrepreneurship Skills in RNR SIWES ACTIVITIES  FEDERAL COLLEGE of AGRICULTURE, AKURE 1. Forestry Tractor Unit 2. Entrepreneurship Development Unit 3. Forestry Unit 4. Horticulture Unit  AFE BABALOLA UNIVERSITY ADO-EKITI FARM 1. Agronomy Unit 2. Livestock Unit FORESTRY UNIT  Forest and Environmental technology also known as Forestry technology, came to in 2017  Sections of the department are; 1. Wood (Wood workshop) 2. Forestry (Nursery and Plantation)  Maintenance of forest nursery and plantation 1. Maintenance tasks included cleaning, weeding, and managing the nursery’s soil. 2. To accommodate young Gmelina trees, the existing Gmelina arboreal plantation was cleared. 3. Pruning was performed to remove dead or excess branches, promoting a straight bole for healthier growth. FORESTRY UNIT CONT’D  Pot filling and seed planting 1. Polypots are used for planting, providing a suitable environment for growth. 2. Top soil is chosen for filling the pots due to its higher nutrient content compared to other soil types. 3. The seeds are specifically dipped into the prepared soil for optimal planting. 4. The method emphasizes the importance of nutrient-rich soil for effective plant growth.  Transplanting 1. Seedlings are initially raised by humans from seed stage in a nursery. 2. Transplanting occurs once seedlings have developed a solid root system. 3. Proper timing is essential; seedlings are typically transplanted when they are self-sufficient. 4. Watering the seedlings a few hours before transplanting helps maintain hydration. 5. Keeping seedlings hydrated reduces the risk of transplant shock during the move. FORESTRY UNIT CONT’D  Plantation Establishment 1. The plantation includes both commercial trees and Anona muricata – Soursop (fruit trees) planted together. 2. A specific spacing of 3 meters by 3 meters was maintained between each tree to facilitate growth. 3. The trees were relocated from polypots to the designated plantation area. 4. A meter tape was utilized to maintain appropriate separation between each tree during planting. 5. Proper watering of seedlings post-planting was implemented to reduce transplant stress.  Felling Operation 1. The operation was performed by a trained professional skilled in safe felling techniques. 2. The trees being cut down were considered dangerous and upsetting, likely due to their impact on the environment. 3. The removal of these trees was beneficial because it allowed more sunlight to reach the other trees and young seedlings in the nursery. 4. Proper training and safety measures are critical in conducting forest operations. FORESTRY UNIT CONT’D CONCLUSIONS  The Practical Year Training Program (PYTP) and Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are essential components of technical and vocational education, particularly in fields such as engineering, agriculture, and technology.  These programs provide students with invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.  Through PYTP and SIWES, students gain exposure to real-world challenges, develop professional skills, and enhance their employability.  They learn to apply classroom concepts in practical settings, understand workplace dynamics, and build networks within their chosen industries.  The experiences gained during these programs are crucial for personal and professional development, preparing students for successful careers. RECOMMENDATION  Enhance Industry Collaboration  Structured Training Programs  Mentorship and Guidance  Regular Evaluation and Feedback  Diverse Training Opportunities
