CIVL 305 Air Quality Engineering Intro. & Criteria Pollutants Dr. Ashraf Aly Hassan Syllabus & Basic Course Information Instructor Information: Name: Dr. Ashraf Aly Hassan, Associate Professor Office location: F1 - Room 1094 Contact information: [email protected] 03 713-5334 3 Course Description The course provides the students the opportunity to use engineering- and science-based approaches to describe, quantify, and assess sources, transport mechanisms, and environmental impacts of atmospheric and indoor air pollutants. Moreover, the course aims to develop an understanding of regulatory approaches to address the health and welfare impacts of air pollution. In addition, it explores the application of air quality models for the evaluation and design of air quality control equipment. Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) 1. Describe the sources, effects, history, and regulation of the major air pollutants. [PLO 1] 2. Interpret experimental laboratory data and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions. [PLO 6] 3. Explain the causes, consequences, and possible solutions for major air quality issues. [PLO 4] 4. Design air quality control equipment by applying knowledge of math, science, and engineering. [PLO 2] 5. Describe the major types of health and welfare effects and how they are used in the regulatory process. [PLO 4] 6. Communicate results both written and orally. [PLO 3 and PLO5] Course Evaluation and Grading Assessment Methods Weight % Due Date Assignments 10% Weeks 3-16 In-class activities 5% Weeks 1-16 Term Project 10% Weeks 10-16 Quizzes 15% Weeks 3-16 Laboratory Reports 10% Weeks 3-14 Midterm Exam 20% Midterm Exam Period Final Exam 30% Final Term Exam Period Week Topics CLOs Assessment Tools Intro. & Criteria Pollutants 1 Concentrations of Air Pollutants 1 2 Pollutants and sources Assignment 1 Aerosol and Clouds laboratory Quiz 1 3 1&2 Lab Report 1 4 Photochemistry 3 5 Atmospheric Chemistry Lab 2&3 Lab Report 2 Course Monitoring, and Emission Inventories 1 Quiz 2 6 Regulations 1 Assignment 2 Outline 7 Control Technologies 4 Assignment 3 8 Midterm Exam 9 Meteorology 3 Quiz 3 10 Dispersion and Transport 3 Assignment 4 AERMOD (laboratory) Quiz 4 11 2&3 Lab Report 3 Health Effects of Air Pollutants 5 12 Welfare Effects of Air Pollutants 5 Quiz 5 13 Global Climate 3 Assignment 5 14 CO2 and Climate Change laboratory 2&3 Lab Report 4 Quiz 6 15 Indoor Air Quality 1 Assignment 6 16 Presentations 6 Final Presentation Introduction How do you feel about the overall air quality in the UAE?
