Practical Guide 4 Digestive System Richard Michael Blay Department of Anatomy UGSBAHS Introduction In this practical, your main objective is to identify each organ or structure of the digestive system, its location in the human body and other related organs. The Components of the Digestive System Gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) + accessory organs. Oesophagus The accessory organs include Stomach the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, and liver. Small Intestines Large Intestines Using this image and chart review and discuss the functions of each part of the Digestive system. Note where the oesophagus starts The Stomach The stomach is a sac- like organ. There are 3 different muscles arranged in different directions. What type of muscle will this be? The Stomach Saclike portion of tract Convoluted surface allows expansion What is the name given to the convoluted inner lining? The Parts of the Stomach Note the shape and parts of the stomach as well as the location. The Small Intestines The small intestine is broken down into three parts: Duodenum Jejenum Ileum Identify the small intestines and note differences between that and the large intestines in terms of appearance, position and Small Intestine Note the parts of the small intestines. 1.The duodenum 2.Jejenum 3.Ileum The Large Intestines Ileum The last portion of the small intestine is the ileum, pass through the caecum into the large intestine. The caecum is the beginning part of the large intestines The Large Intestines Colon (Large Intestine) Three Parts: 1. Ascending Colon 2. Traverse Colon 3. Descending Colon With the aid of the diagram identify the parts of the colon on the model Accessory Organs Liver Identify the liver on the model. Can you see the gall bladder? What is its function? Accessory Organs - Pancreas Gently remove the Liver from the model and identify the pancreas. Note that the Pancreas secretes its contents into the duodenum
