FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1 LESSON 1: NATURE OF INQUIRY Prepared by: Jolina Gabayno, LPT SHS Faculty LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this lesson, the learners are expected to: 1. define what is research 2. enumerate characteristics, processes, ethics of research 3. give the importance of research in daily life. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? In a clean sheet of paper, complete the concept map by Research writing words associated with the middle word. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? Research comes from the Middle French word recerche which means “to go about seeking” This means that research is essentially a recursive attempt to search for truth and a continuous pursuit of knowledge. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? What are the aims of research? (a) to generate new knowledge (b) to find an application for new knowledge (c) to verify existing knowledge (d) to develop the investigator FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? Research is an organized investigation and study of materials and sources to create facts and reach new inferences. Research has come up with developing appropriate solutions to improve the individual’s quality of life. Although it may take place in a different setting and may use different methods, scientific research is universally a systematic and objective search for reliable knowledge (Walker, 2010). FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? Research is a verified approach of thinking and employing legalized instruments and steps to obtain a more adequate solution to a problem that is otherwise impossible to address under ordinary means (Crawford, as cited by Alcantara & Espina, 1995). FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT WHAT IS RESEARCH? In most cases, research helps society to answer the WHAT and HOW questions. It must be a proper investigation and should reach a valid conclusion that would facilitate the finding of answers to the questions. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH Prieto, et.al. (2017) stated that the following are the major characteristics of research: 1.EMPIRICAL - is based on observations and experiments of theories. 2.SYSTEMATIC - follows orderly and sequential procedures, based on valid procedures and principles. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH Prieto, et.al. (2017) stated that the following are the major characteristics of research: 3. CONTROLLED - In research, all variables, except those that are tested/ experimented on, are kept constant. 4. EMPLOYS HYPOTHESIS - refers to a search for facts, answers to questions and solutions to problems. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH Prieto, et.al. (2017) stated that the following are the major characteristics of research: 5. ANALYTICAL - shows analytical procedures in gathering the data, whether historical, descriptive, and or case study. 6. OBJECTIVE - it is unbiased and logical. All findings are logically based on real-life situations. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH Prieto, et.al. (2017) stated that the following are the major characteristics of research: 7. ORIGINAL WORK - it requires its own examination and produces the data needed to complete the study. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH PROCESS Prieto, et.al. (2017) also added that the following are involved in the Research Processes: 1. DEFINE RESEARCH PROBLEM: What is the problem? 2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE: What evidence is already presented? FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH PROCESS Prieto, et.al. (2017) also added that the following are involved in the Research Processes: 3.FORMULATING HYPOTHESIS: How are we going to find/look for the answer to questions being studied? 4. RESEARCH DESIGN: Where will the study be shown and with what population? FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH PROCESS Prieto, et.al. (2017) also added that the following are involved in the Research Processes: 5. COLLECTING DATA: Are we ready to gather the data? Where do we find the data? 6.ANALYZING DATA: How do the data answer the research queries? 7. INTERPRET AND REPORT: What are the implications of the results? FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Ethics in simple words, are norms for conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. The following list is a general summary of some ethical principles that researchers must observe: FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Honesty- Do not fabricate, falsify or misinterpret data. Objectivity- Avoid bias or self-deception. Integrity- Keep your promises and agreements, strive for consistency. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Carefulness- Avoid careless errors and negligence; carefully and critically examine your own work. Openness- Share all the data, resources and ideas. Be open for criticism. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Respect for Intellectual property- Honor patents, copyrights and other forms of intellectual property. Confidentiality- Protect confidential communications and personal information of your respondents, if any. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Social responsibility- Strive to promote social good and prevent or mitigate social harms through research, public education and learning. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Competence- Maintain and improve your own professional competence and expertise through life long education and learning. Legality- Know and obey relevant laws and institutional and government policies. FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT ETHICS IN RESEARCH Animal Care- Show proper respect and care for animals when using them in research. do not conduct unnecessary or poorly designed animal experiments. Human Subjects Protection- respect human dignity, privacy and autonomy and take special precautions with vulnerable populations; and strive to distribute the benefits and burdens of research fairly FIAT LUX ACADEME CAVITE - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
