QCD Polymer II Section, Laboratory Technician 4.4.1 Laboratory technician is responsible to perform the analysis as per work instructions and proper housekeeping after completing the analysis. 5. Process / Instruction Description Overview A. Summary of the Method A flat-ended needle loaded with a specified mass (50 N) is placed in direct contact with a test specimen. The specimen and needle are heated at a rate of 50 + 5°C/hour. The temperature at which the needle (Flat-ended of 1 mm diameter circular) has penetrated a PMMA specimen to a depth of 1 mm is recorded as the vicat softening point. Vicat Softening Temperature gives idea about the thermal stability of PMMA. B. Safety : Use safety goggles, heat resistance gloves and safety shoes. The working area should be clean all the time. C. Apparatus: Heat Distortion Tester: Tinius Olsen 303HDTM D. Tools: Tweezer E. Reagents: Silicone oil with viscosity 100 CST Page 4 Work Instruction PMMA - Vicat Softening Temperature Engineering & Support Quality Control Department Issuing Organization QCD Polymer II Section Document No. Revision No. Effective Date PR/QCD/QCP2/WI-309 01 12/17/2022 Sr. No. Process / Instruction Description Responsibility Org Position 5.1. Preparation of test specimen QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician Prepare PMMA test specimen (length X width X thickness) = (80 X 10 X 4 mm) following PR/QCD/QCP2/WI-308 procedure for Injection Molding for Test Pieces (and Annealing). 5.2. Select two test specimens for testing for each analysis. The test specimens surfaces shall be flat and parallel, no bending and free from flash and check the thickness of the specimens. QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician 5.3. Measurement QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician Press Raise switch to open the oil bath and sample holder then, put the specimen on sample holder. Adjust specimen in sample holder at the center of Needle. Lower the needle by turning nob from right to left. 5.4. Dip the specimen in oil bath by pressing lower switch. QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician 5.5. Apply 6N weight first and then 40 N weight on sample holder. QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician 5.6. Press start to increase temperature at the rate 50°C / hour. QCD Polymer II Section Lab Technician 5.7. After analysis completed , Press the result switch to check the result, result will be displayed on screen. Note down the result.
