HONORIFICS Honorific Defined An honorific is a conventional word, title, or grammatical form that signals respect, politeness, and social deference. Honorifics are also known as courtesy titles or address terms (Nordquist, 2020). Mr. Miss Types of Honorifics 1. Professional Honorifics- used to indicate a person’s professional qualification or title e.g. Dr. (for Doctor) 2. Gender-Based Honorifics – used based on gender e.g. Mr. ( for men) 3. Academic Honorifics- used in the academic setting to acknowledge one’s position or academic achievement e.g. Dean 4. Religious Honorifics- used to address people with religious positions or titles e.g. Father or Reverend (Rev.) 5. Cultural/ Royal Honorifics- used for royalty, nobility, cultural leaders e.g. Lord Her Majesty 6. Kinship Honorifics- used to express respect and affection for family members e.g. Aunt Mom 7.
