BODY OF THE TOPIC OBJECTIVES INTRODUCTION CONCLUSION PRESENTATION PRESENTING POSITION PAPER PRESENTED BY GROUP 5 MANINGAS FIONA NICOLE MENDONES RANDOLF MARI PINEDA DIANE OBJECTIVES What is a position paper? TO LEARN: Presenting a position paper Guide questions in presenting Sample outline for a strong argument a position paper INTRODUCTION What is a Position paper? A position paper is an essay where an author formally presents a personal opinion with a piece of supporting evidence on a particular arguable topic, opinion, and issue. The opinion is usually provided comprehensively to help people better understand your position on the issue. The purpose of writing a position paper is to convince the audience that your opinion is valid. Position paper is used for presenting an author’s position on a certain issue. A position paper is similar to argumentative paper wherein the author presents both sides of an argument, afterwards the author selects his/her side of the argument and convinces the readers that the author’s position is valid. Guide questions in presenting a strong argument BEFORE CHOOSING THE ISSUE FOR YOUR POSITION PAPER, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: - IS IT A REAL ISSUE THAT INVOLVES GENUINE DISAGREEMENT AND UNCERTAINTY? - CAN YOU EASILY IDENTIFY TWO DIFFERENT POSITIONS? - ARE YOU PERSONALLY INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING ONE OF THESE POSITIONS? - IS THE ISSUE NARROW ENOUGH TO BE MANAGEABLE? Is it a real issue that involves genuine disagreement and uncertainty? (Ito ba ay isang tunay na isyu na nagsasangkot ng tunay na hindi pagkakasundo at kawalan ng katiyakan?) Before choosing the issue that you want to write a position paper you will at least need to find out; is the issue real? does the issue involve a strong disagreement? By answering these questions your paper is going to be worth reading. Can you easily identify two different positions? (Madali mo bang matukoy ang dalawang magkaibang posisyon?) Before writing your position paper you will need to identify two different positions so that you can choose your side and present that side properly and clearly. Are you personally interested in supporting one of these positions? (Interesado ka bang personal na suportahan ang isa sa mga posisyong ito?) Choosing a topic that you are interested in for a position paper is important for several reasons; Engagement and motivation, Quality of work, personal connections, etc. Is the issue narrow enough to be manageable? (Ang isyu ba ay sapat na makitid upang mapamahalaan?) A focused topic allows for concentrated research and argumentation, leading to a clear and comprehensive paper. Guide questions for Audience consideration IN CONSIDERING THE AUDIENCE, ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE? WHAT DO THEY BELIEVE? WHAT EVIDENCE IS LIKELY TO BE EFFECTIVE WITH THEM? PRESENTING POSITION PAPER Based on the discussion on societal issues, refer to the following prompt and think of a feasible issue for your position paper. Make sure that your teacher approves your issue. Members of your community tapped you to prepare a position paper that addresses a problem for the community. The paper should include the position, counterclaims, claims, and evidence needed to strengthen your position. The paper should employ the academic writing style and should not exceed 1,500 words. You will present your position paper in a forum. Your presentation is on the salient points of the paper, and you are given ten minutes for the presentation and five minutes for the question and answer. My issue is: because: Example: 1. My issue is: The legalization and societal acceptance of same-sex marriage. 2. Because: The right to marry should be generally applied, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Denying same-sex couples the ability to marry Continues discrimination and inequality. After having your issue approved, write down the claims you would like to include on your position paper. Claim 1: Claim 2: Claim 3: example: Claim 1: Legalizing same-sex marriage ensures that all couples have equal access to legal rights and benefits, including inheritance, healthcare decision-making, and tax advantages, which are currently available only to heterosexual couples. Claim 2: Denying same-sex couples the right to marry reinforces societal discrimination and inequality, sending a message that LGBTQ+ relationships are less valid or important than heterosexual relationships. Claim 3: Legal recognition of same-sex marriage strengthens the social and emotional stability of families, including those with children, by providing the same legal protections and support systems that benefit all families. Focus 1 Remember that an important dimension of a position paper is a clear thesis, which is your stand concerning an issue. The claims should be clearly stated to guide you in preparing your outline. Example: Air conditioners should not be installed in schools as they will contribute to global warming, increase operating costs, and contribute to a tuition increase. Enrichment 1 With your approved issue and claims, prepare your thesis statement for the position paper. Include a six-point outline. Thesis Statement: (ex. Samesex marriage) Outline: (human rights, mental well-being, equality, etc.) Focus 2 Write your introduction for the position paper, with three essential parts: background information, introduction of the issue, and thesis statement. Enrichment 2 Fill in the following chart with keywords and details useful for your intro- duction. Using your essential points, draft the introduction of your position paper. Make sure to consult your teacher and peers for feedback Solicit feedback by having them fill out this form. With the feedback from your peers and your teacher, revise your introduction. Be sure to highlight the improvements made in your draft for future reference. Focus 3 In writing the body of your position paper, make sure that you observe two things: 1. First, claims should be developed from topic sentences; 2. Second, claims should be backed up by solid evidence. Enrichment 3 Fill in the following information Example: Claim: Legalizing same-sex marriage ensures that all couples have equal access to legal rights and benefits. Topic Sentence: The legalization of same-sex marriage is essential for guaranteeing that all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, receive equal legal rights and protections. Evidence Needed: Statistics on legal rights and benefits exclusive to married couples, such as tax breaks, inheritance rights, and healthcare benefits. Examples of states or countries that have enacted same-sex marriage laws and the impact on LGBTQ+ couples' legal rights. Testimonials from same-sex couples highlighting the differences in legal recognition before and after legalization. With the essential points, draft the body of your position paper. Make sure to consult your teacher and your peers for feedback. Feedback Task for Claims Ask your peer and your teacher to answer the following questions regarding the draft of the body of your position paper. They may also write specific comments on your draft. 1. Are the topic sentences in the body of the position paper present in each paragraph? Do these topic sentences support the thesis statement? How can they be improved or strengthened? 2. What supporting details are given to support the topic sentences? What other supporting details could be added to the work to strengthen the argument? Are they clearly expressed? How can they be improved so readers can understand the claims made in the paper? 3. Are effective transitional devices used to help signal shifts in purpose? Given the feedback from your peer and teacher, revise the body of the position paper. Be sure to highlight the specific improvements made to your draft for future reference. Focus 4 The conclusion is composed of two parts: a summary of the main claims in your argument and a restatement of your thesis statement. Enrichment 4 Examining previous sections you have drafted, prepare your conclusion. Make sure to consult your teacher and your peers for feedback. Feedback Task for Conclusion With the draft of your conclusion, let your peer and your teacher comment on your work. Ask them to fill out the respective checklists below. Given the feedback from your peers and teacher, revise your conclusion. Be sure to highlight the specific improvements made to your draft for future reference. Enrichment 5 With the revised parts of your paper, combine these sections for your position paper and fill out the reflective checklist before submitting it to your teacher for marking. Reflective Checklist Before submission, examine your whole position paper and fill out this checklist. After taking a reflective checklist, you can improve your paper and if their is no improvements then your position paper ready to be present. THANK YOU WWW.REALLYGREATSITE.COM
