Population Study Guide These are items you should really study as you prepare for the test. Remember, do not just “read over” your notes. Do something with them! Highlight them, rewrite them, and categorize them. Think of possible questions that we may ask. When you do something with information, you tend to remember it and apply it better. It is also a good idea to do practice questions – look at Quizlet and choose the test option. Also, use AI to help create MC questions. GO OVER ALL THE VOCABULARY AS WELL! 1. Make sure you know the most populous countries and regions. What changes to the most populous countries will happen in the next 10-20 years? 2. What does ecumene mean and what % is it? 3. Know the different types of densities and be able to analyze them. Example: is it good or bad to have a high physiological density? What does it mean if your arithmetic density is low but your agricultural density is high? When can density numbers be misleading? 4. Be able to define: a. CBR, CDR and NIR. How do they relate? Which of these is the most important in terms of growth rates? Where are these the highest? Lowest? Why? (Think continents.) Example: What continent has the highest NIR? Asia/Africa/Europe/South America? b. What is the dependency ratio? What is the equation? What could these numbers mean for certain countries – for example, an aging population? A very young population? Think socially and economically c. What is the rule of 70? How do you figure this out? d. What is TFR? What does it tell us if a country’s high? Low? e. What is the replacement rate? What is the consequence of zero/negative population growth? 5. What is the DTM? Be able to sketch and describe it. Include social and economic reasons for the transitions. Who (LDC, MDC, SP) is in which stage? Example: Which country is in stage 3 of the DTM? Brazil/Nigeria/Laos/France? Example: List some good things about zero population growth. Example: What are some challenges to a high birth rate? Example: What are some challenges to a low birth rate? Example: As countries industrialize, do the Death Rates drop first or the Birth Rates? What stage is this? Do they both eventually drop as industrialization increases? 6. What area of the world was the DTM created to describe? 7. What is the difference between the j-curve and the s-curve? 8. Describe population pyramids and what they can be used for. 9. Analyze one. 10. What are the basic shapes and which types of countries do they apply to? Example: A country with a small base (ages 0-15) would be? Expanding/stable/Declining? Which country would fit this description? Nigeria/India/Finland? 11. Who was Thomas Malthus and what did he believe? Be specific. Why did he believe this? How did he think this could be stopped or at least slowed down? 12. Neo-Malthusians agree with Malthus. What “proof” do they have? 13. Then there are the critics of Malthus. What are their arguments? Who is the main critic? 14. Define carrying capacity. What happens if this is exceeded? 15. What is the Epidemiological Transition model? And can you apply it to the DTM? 16. What are Pro-Natalist policies? Give examples of some. 17. Why would some countries have pro-Natalist policies? Example: Which country would have Pro-Natalist policies: Nigeria/France/India/Mexico 18. What are some Anti-Natalist policies? Give examples of some. 19. Why would some countries have anti-Natalist policies? Example: Which country would have Anti-Natalist policies: Kenya/France/Australia/Russia?
