ELLIOTT FAMILY - Peters + Elliott The Peters Branch Hi. My name is Cathleen Mary Gladys Peters and I was born on Monday 7th May 1894 at Tom Groggin near Nimmitabel, and I am your grandmother. I wish to tell you something of your ancestors. Martin tells me I only have 25 minutes. I’ll see what I can cover in that time. I’ll start with my father’s side, the Peters. My grandparents, John Peters and Bridget Burke, were born in Barnshea, County Tipperary, Ireland in about 1810 and 1816 respectively. John and Bridget arrived in Sydney from County Tipperary, Ireland aboard the ship 'Livingstone' on the 20th October 1841. They had been married in Ireland in February, earlier that year, and came as free immigrants John’s occupation was listed as a farm labourer, shepherd, carrier, grazier, farm hand, and his religion was Catholic. Bridget’s occupation was listed as house servant, home duties, and her religion was also Catholic. John and Bridget had 10 children and they lived at the following places when their children were born: 1842-1844 - `Bulamalong Run` near Queanbeyan. 1846 - Bolaro near Cooma. 1848 - Coolringdon near Cooma. 1850 - Snowy River near Cooma. 1853-1856 - Gegedzerick near Berridale, NSW. 1857-1862 - Nimmitabel. This map gives you an idea of the different places John and Bridget Peters were living when their children were born from 1842 - 1862. John and Bridget lived in Tom Groggin near Nimmitabel, until their deaths in (John) 1882 and (Bridget) 1898. They are both buried at the Pioneer Cemetery, Nimmitabel. Julia - who is buried in Mittagang Cemetery, Cooma, Grave 220a. Her husband, James Tracey, arrived with his parents in NSW when only seven years of age. ‘He lived at Tom Groggin for many years, and carried on sheep and cattle raising, later taking up his residence at Numeralla where he remained up till the time of his death, enjoying excellent health until a few months since, when he began to fail. He had led an active life and was in full possession of his faculties up to the period of his decease. He followed mining for a while, when the diggings broke out at Fiery Creek, some 20 years since.’ Thomas - and Catherine Jarvis, his wife, lived at ‘Cowbed Creek’ on the Tom Groggin Road for several years until they purchased property known as ‘River View' on the MacLaughlin River. In addition to farming, Thomas also owned a bullock team which he used for carrying supplies to Eden and back. They are buried at Nimmitabel. John Jr - is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Nimmitabel, NSW, Grave 12. The cause of his death was drowned after being washed from his horse in the Snowy River. John's body was recovered on the 8th June 1873, 6 miles downstream from where he was washed from his horse. His brother Tobias is reported to have stated, 'I, with others removed the body to Willis in NSW and there buried it.' Catherine - and her husband, Alexander McDonald, had 13 children, 9 of their children were born in Nimmitabel from 1867-1881, and 4 were born at "Fairlight", Bega, New South Wales from 1884-1894. Tobias - married Hannah Butler. He is buried in Nimmitabel Cemetery, NSW, Grave 89, with his wife. Mary - married Stephen Laulis (Lawless) on 23 Jun 1885 in Bombala, NSW, on the same day she gave birth to their son John Patrick Lawless. Richard - married Winifred Berkery and is buried in Nimmitabel Cemetery, NSW, Grave 155. James - married Bridget Gerahty and both are buried in Nimmitabel Cemetery, NSW, Grave 154. David - married Jessie Glennan and both are buried in Nimmitabel Cemetery, NSW, Grave 153. Edmund (Ned) Joseph - married Almeria Margaret Mary Tindall, my parents. Another name for Edmund was Edward or Ned. Edward is the name in all his children's birth certi cates. They lived at Nimmitabel for the birth of their 11 children, the second of which was Cathleen Mary Gladys, that’s me. Another name for Almeria was Mary. On my birth certi cate, Almeria's name is misspelt as Almera. I believe that the photo below is a photo of my father, Ned Peters, and my mother, Mary Peters. I also believe that this is a photo of my father taken with me. fi fi That’s my father’s side, the Peters, but of course there is my mother’s side, the Tindall family. This story is quite interesting and we can go back to about 1615 when my great x7 grandfather, Johannes Tindall was born in Yorkshire, England. However, that might be a bit far so I will only talk about my great x2 grandfather, Daniel James Tindall, Senior, who was born on Friday 2nd November 1764 in Egham, Surrey, England, and arrived in Sydney, Australia on the convict ship, the ‘Duke of Portland’ on Monday 27 July 1807. Daniel was tried and convicted at the Surrey Special Session Gaol Delivery and Oyer and Terminer on 20th January 1803 of High Treason, he was part of a plot to kill King George III in 1803 (known as 'The Despards Conspiracy'). He was sentenced in Surrey to be hung, drawn and quartered in Feb, 1803 but he and 2 other men, Thomas Newman and William Lander, were given a last minute reprieve and transported to Australia, January 1807, for life, on the condition that he never return to England. After 7 years of hard labour & good behaviour Daniel’s wife Amelia ‘Jane’ Doyle arrived free with their four children, Daniel (jr),James, Mary and Charles on board the 'Kangaroo' on 12 January, 1814. They had two more children, Emma and Susannah, before Daniel’s death in 1827. Daniel Snr was given a Ticket of Leave in March, 1814 and emancipated by Governor Macquarie in 1817. Daniel is buried at Liverpool Pioneers Memorial Park near St Lukes church. Amelia ‘Jane’ Tindall, nee Doyle, remarried after Daniel died, to a Charles Palmer, and was also buried at Liverpool Pioneers Memorial Park. Daniel and Amelia’s second child, James Tindall, was my great grandfather. The Tindall family, like the Peters family, was amongst the early arrivals in both the Colony of New South Wales and the Nimmitabel area. The Tindall connection with Nimmitabel began around 1846 when James Tindall and his wife, my great grandmother, Almeria Palmer moved to the Nimmitabel area from Yarramundi Lagoon, near Agnes Banks in the Richmond area. Family anecdotes allude to a lack of rewood at Curry Flat, near Nimmitabel, so the family moved to live on Kybean Road (near the Kirwin’s place). There is a record of a J. Tindall’s license to depasture stock from 1850-1857 and in 1865 James Tindall was listed as the lessee of Nimmitybelle Run, area 16,000 acres, grazing capability 400 sheep. James died of consumption in 1865 and is buried at the Nimmitabel Cemetery, NSW, Australia. Almeria was buried at Kameruka Farm Cemetery, Kameruka, Bega Valley Shire, NSW, Australia James and Almeria’s 4th child, Oliver Tindall married Christina McDonald, also from Nimmitabel. Oliver and Christina were my mother’s parents, my grandparents. They lived on a selection called ‘Burragunda’, on the Tomgroggin Road and both are buried alongside their daughter, 6 year old Catherine, in the Pioneer Cemetery, Tomgroggin Road. Oliver was the last person to be buried in this cemetery. Oliver and Christina Tindall had 6 children, all born at Nimmitabel, and Almeria Margaret Mary Tindall, the second eldest, was my mother. fi My mum and dad, Ned Peters and Almeria ‘Mary’ Tindall were married in 1891 in Bombala and lived in Nimmitabel from then until at least 1906. They were living in Bemboka when my youngest sibling James Francis, was born. They were still living in the Bega area in 1921 because that’s where I met and married Percy Elliott, your grandfather. They had moved to 41 Robertson St West Kogarah by 1930. The following census information show where my parents lived: 1930 - 41 Robertson St,West Kogarah, NSW, Australia; Almeria Margaret, Edward (labourer), Edward (labourer), Frederick (labourer), Charlotte Doris (shop assistant), Hannah Coleman(counter hand), Irene Bridget (shop assistant), Julia Josephine (machinist) 1940 - 41 Robertson St, West Kogarah, NSW, Australia (Edmund died in 1941) 1942-1967 - 41 Robertson St, West Kogarah, NSW, Australia (Almeria died in 1968. This would have been when your Dad and Mum, Ray and Fay Elliott, bought Robertson St.) Ned and Almeria’s children, my brothers and sisters, your father’s aunts and uncles, were: John Albert, who married Edith Sarah Elliott, also know as Uncle Bert and Auntie Eadie to you all. They were married in Bega in 1918 when Bert was working as a dairyman at Jellat Jellat estate. Bert and Eadie lived at the following places: 1930 - Back Forest, Berry - dairy farmer 1933-1943 - Burraga Island, better known as Pig Island, Bomaderry/Nowra 1949-1973 - Bomaderry, until the time of their deaths, Bert in 1973 and Eadie in 1976. Myself, Cathleen Mary Gladys. I married Percy Allan Elliott, who was Auntie Eadie’s brother, in 1921 at Bega. Percy was born in Candelo and I was living in Bemboka, so that is probably how we met, the 4 of us, Bert and Eadie and Percy and I, going to social events together. Christina Vera who married Oswald Johnson in 1921 at Marrickville. You all knew them as Chris and Oz and their children were Vera and Kevin Comerford, Allan and Heather Johnson, Joan Bishop and Ron and Elaine Johnson. Oliver Rex who married Myra in 1940 at Kogarah. Irene Bridget who married George Ford, parents of Brian Ford who your dad used to talk about, in 1931 at Kogarah. Hannah 'Annie' Coleman Zoe married Vince Maley in 1940 at Kogarah. Known as Vince and Annie. Her twin sister, Charlotte ‘Dorrie’ Doris married Clarence Michael Slattery in 1930 at Kogarah. They were known as Mick and Dorrie. Julia Josephine married Reg Paterson. They were known as Reg and Julie. They had 1 son, Jeffery. Frederick married Mary in 1938 in Nowra and they were known as Fred and Mary. Edward, married Edna in 1940. I think they were known as Ed and Edna James Francis married Mary in 1938 at Kogarah. They were known as Jim and Molly, I think.
