Coping is a combination of both problem-focused and emotion- focused remedies. Stress reduction Methods: 1. Conduct creative imagery of the problem 2. Seek group or social support 3. Get into a relaxation activities 4. Create a situation where you can feel more relaxed 5. Learn to manage your time 6. Eat properly Stress Reduction Methods: 1. Seek spiritual growth through prayer and meditation 2. Have a worthwhile hobby 3. Watch a movie with friends 4. Have a nice, quiet walk with a member of your family after dinner. 5. Assess your stressor if it’s doable or realistic. 6. Believe in yourself 7. Start worrying if there is a reason to worry once the situation arises, not before it does. BALMES, LPT CONCEPTS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING MENTAL HEALTH ▪ According to the US National Institute of Health, “mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social-being.” ▪ The 1999 US Surgeon General’s Report, “successful mental performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to change to cope with adversity.” ▪ The World Health Organization’s (WHO) released in 2001, stated that “mental health is defined differently by different experts from different cultures.” SIX CONCEPTS OF MENTAL HEALTH (According to World Health Organization) Subjective Well-being Perceived Self-Efficacy Autonomy Competence Intergenerational Dependence Self-actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional potential, among others. 1. SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING This may be defined as one’s personal (subjective) thoughts and feelings about one’s overall state of being. Our mental health denotes positive and healthy interpretations of a person’s self- concept, and how a person feels about himself. 2. PERCEIVED SELF-EFFICACY SELF-EFFICACY is one’s perception of one’s value and worth, effectiveness, and ability in performing a task or activity. 3. AUTONOMY AUTONOMY deals with one’s capacity to separate one’s identity from other significant persons like parents, lovers, and special friends. 4. COMPETENCE COMPETENCE is the perception of one’s capacity to perform effectively a function or activity using specific skills and knowledge, and achieving the desired results at a given time. 5. INTERGENERATIONAL DEPENDENCE INTERGENERATIONAL DEPENDENCE refers to relationships between individuals who belong to different generations providing for each others’ many needs, such as financial assistance, nursing care, and emotional support. 6.SELF-ACTUALIZATION OF ONE’S INTELLECTUAL AND EMOTIONAL POTENTIAL SELF-ACTUALIZATION is about fulfilling one’s perceived potentials, becoming the person that one has always inspired for. HEALTHY SELF-CONCEPT AT THE CORE OF MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Healthy Self-Concept + Healthy Mind and Body = Good Mental Health and Well-being If you have a balanced healthy Self-concept, healthy mind and body you will experienced general well-being. WELL-BEING is a state of wellness where every aspect of a person is in balance. CHALLENGES TO MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING AMONG ADOLESCENTS MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS are short term and temporary changes in person’s thoughts, feelings, or behavior that upset one’s well- being, interpersonal relationships, and productivity. MENTAL ILLNESS refers to diagnosable mental disorders that may require medical attention. POSSIBLE MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES FACED BY ADOLESCENTS WORLDWIDE: Conduct disorders Anxiety Depression and eating disorder Risk behaviors that relate to sexual behavior, substance abuse, and violent behavior.
