Music Musical Symbols Notes  Rhythm makes a musical composition distinct because it forms a pattern of long and short beats.  These beats enhance the musical piece and make it unique.  Note is a symbol used to represent a musical sound.  Each note in a musical piece shows a number of beats or the time value or duration that it must be played or sung.  Note Symbol Time Value Whole Note 4 beats Half Note 2 beats Quarter Note 1 beats Eighth Note ½ beats  Whole note Longest note duration. Four beats long.  Half note Half duration of a whole note. Two beats long.  Quarter note Fourth or Quarter duration of the whole note. One beats long.  Eighth note Eighth duration of the whole note.
