Rhythms – denote an aspect of the quality of movement, which is sometimes thought as dance. Structured forms, which start creative rhythmic movements, are sometimes called rhythm. Dancing – is a means of expressing one’s emotions through movements disciplined by rhythm. It is an act of moving rhythmically and expressively to an accompaniment. The word dancing originated from the German word “danson” which means to stretch. All dancing is basically made up of stretching and relaxing movements. Dance – is a series of movements set to music where there IMPORTANCE OF DANCE Builds Confidence – Dance is a great way to connect emotionally with an audience and other people. Health – Dance Provides the necessary daily physical fitness recommendations of most health care professionals. Social Involvement – Dance enable one to meet new friends. Fun Activity and Relaxation – The number one rule to dancing is to find joy and fun in what we are doing. Creativity and Imagination – Dancers will work on ELEMENTS OF DANCE Space – the area covered by the dance movements (this includes shape, level, directions, and pathways). - Directions: forward, backward, sideways up, down, etc. - Level: the distance from the floor (high, medium, low). - Pathways: patterns that the body makes as it moves through space or on the floor (diagonal, zigzag, circle, etc.) ELEMENTS OF DANCE Time – how fast or slow (tempo); even or uneven beat and long or short (duration) the movement is rhythm, freezes, acceleration/decelartion. Energy – quality, force, effort. Body – zones of the body, shapes, base. Action – Locomotor and Non-locomotor Movements. CLASSIFICATION OF FOLK DANCES A. Geographical Classification 1. National Dances – found throughout the islands with little or no modification. Examples: Rigodon, Carinosa, Jota, Balitaw, Pandanggo 2. Local Dances – found in a certain locality. Examples: Tinikling, Maglalatik, Subli, Biniganbigat B. Nature Occupationa l 1. Depicting action of certain occupation, industry, or human labor. Examples: Planting, Harvesting, Pounding, Winnowing, Pabirik, Manguete Religious or Ceremonial 2. Performed in connection with religious vows and ceremonies. Examples: Dugsu, Sua-sua, Putong, Sta. Clarang Pinung-pino Comic Dances 3. Depicting funny movements for entertainment. Examples: Kimbo- kimbo, Mokonggo, Kinoton, Itik-itik. Game Dances 4. With play elements (dance mixers). Examples: Lubi- lubi, Pavo Wedding Dances 5. Performed during wedding feasts. Examples: Panasahan, Pantomina Courtship Dances 6. Depicting love making. Examples: Tadek- Daling-daling, Hele- hele, Bago Quiere, Maramion Festival Dances 7. Suitable for occasion or any social gatherings. Examples: Pandanggo, Habanera, Jota, Surtido War Dances 8. Dances With Songs – Abaruray, Manag Biday, Lulay, Rogelia, Lawiswis, Kawayan. 2. Old Ballroom Dances – Polka, Mazurka, Choris, Valse 3. Dances with Implements – Maglalatik, Sakuting, La Jota Moncadena, Tinikling, Salakot. 4. Dances of Combined Rhythm – Surtido, Pantomina, Los Bayles de Ayer Put your right and left arms in front of you at beginning. Second, elevate your left arm while keeping your right arm in position.
