Height of the Ring from the Floor 10 feet (3.05 meters) BALL PLAYING AREA OF BASKETBALL Basic Skills of Basketball Positions Shooting Guard (SG): The shooting guard is primarily responsible for scoring points, often through long-range shooting and driving to the basket. They are skilled at creating offensive opportunities, whether by cutting through defenses or making quick decisions with the ball. Additionally, they play a crucial role in defense, intercepting passes, guarding perimeter players, and applying pressure to force turnovers. Small Forward (SF): Known for their versatility, small forwards are capable of performing a wide range of tasks on the court. They contribute to scoring through both outside shooting and driving to the hoop. Small forwards are also strong rebounders and defenders, often tasked with guarding players of various sizes and positions. Their well-rounded abilities make them essential in transitioning between offense and defense. Power Forward (PF): Power forwards are positioned near the basket and are known for their strength and physicality. They excel at rebounding, both offensively and defensively, and are proficient in close-range scoring, using post moves to outmaneuver defenders. They are also key in setting screens for teammates and defending the paint, helping to protect the rim and stop opposing players from scoring in the key area. Point Guard (PG): Often referred to as the "floor general," the point guard is the primary playmaker of the team. They control the ball, set up offensive plays, and ensure teammates are in the right positions. Exceptional ball-handling skills, court vision, and quick decision-making are essential for this role. Point guards also contribute to scoring by penetrating defenses, shooting when needed, and creating opportunities for their teammates. Offensively, they use their height and strength to score in the post, often with hooks, dunks, and put-backs. Center (C): The center is usually the tallest player on the team and plays a dominant role near the basket. Centers excel at rebounding, both offensively to create second-chance opportunities and defensively to stop opponents. They are skilled at blocking shots and protecting the rim, making them the anchor of the team's defense. Offensively, they use their height and strength to score in the post, often with hooks, dunks, and put-backs. 1. Ball handling- Holding the ball correctly using your fingertips. 2. Passing- The most difficult skill in playing basketball. ⚬ -This skill requires your vision, touch and, strength. ⚬ -There are three basic kinds of pass Chest Pass Bounce Pass Overhead Pass 3. Dribbling- Is an important attacking skill done by tapping of the ball with your fingers and in just one hand. 4. Shooting- Is one of the most important basic skills in basketball because it gives your team a scoring point. ï¿ There are different way of shooting: ⚬ Set shot ⚬ Layup shot ⚬ Jump shot ⚬ Hook shot ⚬ Slam dunk Set shot- done on free throw line, also known as free throw shot. Layup shot- done while the player moves and throws the ball into basket. Jump shot- done in bending down and jumping to shoot the ball. Hook shot- done by arching the far hand upward while moving sideways to the basket. Slam dunk shot- done by a player who takes the ball and throws it down to the basket with great force.
