PHYSICAL EDUCATION Is an integral part of the general education designed to promote the desired level of fitness through participation in well selected activities. Is an important part of the curriculum, a subject that gives an opportunity to achieve, develop, and maintain the desired fitness level through various games, sports and activities. THREE FUNCTIONS OF P.E Biological Function Integrative Function Social Function BIOLOGIC Refers to the enhancement of the individual’s growth and development through body movements. INTEGRATIVE Refers to personality integration achieved through participation in properly selected physical education activities. SOCIAL Consist of transmitting values and standards that are consistent with the needs and ideals of society. FITNESS The ability to live healthy, satisfying, and useful life. PHYSICAL FITNESS Is a condition that allows the body to effectively cope with the demands of daily activities and still has energy to enjoy other active leisure activities. HEALTH RELATED FITNESS The ability to become and stay physically healthy. SKILL RELATED FITNESS Enhances one’s performance in athletic or sports events. CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS Is the ability of the heart (cardio) and circulatory system (vascular) to supply oxygen to muscles for an extended period of time. Is also called cardio respiratory (lungs) fitness. MUSCULAR STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE Is the muscle’s ability to produce effort or perform. FLEXIBILITY Is the ability to move a body part through full range of motion at joint. BODY COMPOSITION Is the ratio of body fat to lean body mass ( including water, bones, muscles, and connective tissues). SKILL RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS AGILITY The ability to make sudden change in direction BALANCE The ability of an individual to control; organic equipment, neuromuscular; It is also a state of equilibrium COORDINATION The ability of one of the more parts of the body to move in harmony with other parts of the body; ability to use the senses together with body parts in performing task smoothly and accurately. SPEED The ability of an individual to make successive movement of the same kind in the shortest period of time. POWER The ability to release maximum force in the shortest period of time. REACTION TIME The length of time an individual to initiates a response to specific stimuli. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND EXERCISE Activities done by the skeletal muscles that utilize energy is called Physical Activity. Activities you are doing at home or in school are physical activity. It is classified into 4 domains: occupational, domestic, transportation and leisure time. OCCUPATIONAL These are the activities you do at your workplace. DOMESTIC These are the activities you do at home. TRANSPORTATION These are activities that involves travelling. LEISURE TIME These are the activities you do during recreational activities. EXERCISE According to study by Buckworth and Dishman, is the planned structured, repetitive bodily movements that someone engages in for the purpose of improving or maintaining physical fitness or health. AEROBIC Aerobic activities, also called endurance activities, are physical activities in which people move their large muscles in a rhythmic manner for a sustained period. MUSCULAR STRENGTHENING ACTIVITY This kind of activity, which includes resistance training and lifting weight causes the body’s muscles to work or hold against an applied force or weight. BONE-STRENGTHENING ACTIVITY Sometimes called weight- bearing or weight loading activity. Produce a force on the bones that promotes bone growth and strength.
