READING TEST How artificial intelligence (AI) can help young people find work A recent report has identified three ways in which AI can be used to help young people find work. Focus on competences, not just qualifications AI-profiling can help employers focus more on a candidate’s practical skills, rather than formal qualifications. For example, doing chores at home or volunteering teach competences like planning and resource management, but traditional CVs often don’t mention these things. AI can help young people, especially those without official job experience, feel more confident and help them highlight their practical skills to possible employers. Also vulnerable youth, like refugees, often have difficulty not only due to lack of qualifications but also because of language barriers. Conversational AI chatbots can translate in real time, helping them understand job interviews more easily. Helping you learn AI can also show candidates which skills they need to learn to improve their employment prospects. For example, online learning platforms like Coursera use AI to check young people’s test scores and tell them what they should learn next. There are also apps like KnackApp that use AI-designed games to assess people’s creativity and persistence. It also explains the skills they need to work in different industries like retail or construction. Jobs of the future No one knows precisely what job skills will be needed in the future, but AI applications can quickly analyse data from a wide variety of sources, like government websites, to predict more accurately which jobs will be in demand in future. Having access to ‘just in time’ market trends helps educational institutions adapt their curriculums to the needs of employers too. Of course, for AI to successfully help young people find employment, it must take into account biases related to people’s jobs and gender that might exist in the data. It’s also crucial that AI respects people’s privacy. READING TEST QUESTIONS 1.
