The Natural Sound Source  the beginning of human speech is based on the concept of natural sounds  early men and women imitated the natural sounds heard around them, e. g. cuckoo  “Bow-Wow” Theory  Yo-Heave-Ho Theory The Divine Source  God created Adam and “whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof...“ as it is said in the Bible The Oral-Gesture Source  there is a link between physical gesture and orally produced sounds;  physical gesture = a means of indicating a wide range of emotional states and intuitions;  non-verbal communication; Physiological Adaptation  humans are the only living creatures that posses physical features for speech;  human teeth - upright and they are roughly even in height [ “f, v, th”];  the human mouth -relatively small, flexible tongue;  the human lips - intricate muscles [“p, b, w”];  the human larynx; Functions of language  transactional function – to impart factual information and to convey messages (to communicate knowledge, information;  interactional function - we use language to interact with each other socially or emotionally.
