Historically, there were five (5) branches of philosophy but through time and the shift of people’s knowledge and interest; philosophy’s branch extended into newer ideas and topics like Politics, Religion and Science. 1st branch of philosophy is Ethics. What is ethics? Ethics simply means “knowing what is right from wrong.” This branch also focuses on virtues and morality. 2nd branch of philosophy is Epistemology. Originated from the word “Episteme” which means knowledge. Epistemology focuses on the boundaries of our knowledge. 3rd branch of philosophy is Metaphysics. From the word “Meta” which means beyond, metaphysics explores reality beyond science like the existence of beings, objects and their properties and purpose. 4th branch of philosophy is Logic. Perhaps, the recognizable one out of the branches of philosophy. Logic situates itself on how we should do systematic argument. Remember that in every academic debate, you cannot win with simply insulting your opponent. 5th branch of philosophy is Aesthetics. What is aesthetics? By definition, aesthetics deals with relating to beauty. If an art resembles aesthetic value or is it pleasing to the eyes? Anything that deals with beauty, it correlates to this branch of philosophy. 6th branch of philosophy is Religion. Centers itself on determining the reality of the divine and the standards of faith. 7th and the last branch of philosophy is Politics. Politics deals with structural governance and its influence on how the people mold and develop their ideals, principles and knowledge.
