Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Interpersonal Communication: Involves selective, systemic, unique, processual transactions that allow people to reflect and build personal knowledge of one another and create shared meaning. SELECTIVE I-it I-you I-thou SYSTEMIC -Comm takes place within various social systems (this affects meaning) UNIQUE -Each person and relationship is unique (this might require us to adjust our comm at times) -Remember to engage in dual perspective PROCESSUAL -Comm is a process -It evolves/changes over time -It is linked to the past, present, and future TRANSACTIONAL -Comm is continuous and simultaneous (sending and receiving messages happens at the same time) -This means there is a shared responsibility for effective comm PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE -We get to know each other personally -Self-disclosure (revealing things about ourselves that others wouldn’t know from simple observation) MEANING CREATING -We co-create meaning through comm (symbolic interaction) -Content level- literal meaning -Relational level-what the message reveals about the relationship *responsiveness *liking *power TIPS -Remember that we cannot avoid communicating when we are around other people -Learn to metacommunicate (comm about comm) effectively -Develop a range of skills -Adapt comm appropriately -Engage in dual perspective -Monitor your comm -Commit to effective and ethical comm -Remember that comm doesn’t solve all problems
