Nursing Objectives Faiza Khadim Arain Lecturer English DIHPE (General Education) Nursing Objectives In nursing, having clearly defined objectives is essential to proper patient care and medical teamwork. In addition to discussing these practices, it is important to write down the objectives, as they form a permanent record and can be used to evaluate how well nurses are doing in their clinical practice. For measurable objectives, the SMART format offers an effective formula. A point to remember… Every program of instruction, course, or training activity begins with a goal. This goal can be broken down into specific goals, or learning objectives, which are concise statements about what students will be able to do when they complete instruction. Goals & Objectives Goals are general guidelines that explain what you want to achieve in your community. They are usually long-term and represent global visions such as “protect public health and safety.” Objectives define strategies or implementation steps to attain the identified goals. Unlike goals, objectives are specific, measurable, and have a defined completion date. They are more specific and outline the “who, what, when, where, and how” of reaching the goals. Example… Goal: Develop an increased understanding of careers in health education by the end of the Fall 2024 semester Objectives: Find five job descriptions for health education-related jobs by the beginning of December Interview two current health education professionals by the end of November Identify three organizations that employ health educators by the end of September A common way of describing goals and objectives is to say that : Goals are broad Objectives are narrow Goals are general intentions Objectives are precise Goals are intangible Objectives are tangible Goals are abstract Objectives are concrete Goals are generally difficult to Objectives are measurable measure What is the SMART criteria? Objective Writing A clear learning objective states what the learner will be able to do upon completion of a continuing medical education activity, in terms of behavioral change. A clear objective identifies the terminal behavior or desired outcome of the educational offering. When writing objectives, follow these 3 steps: Step 1 Learning objectives begin with the phrase: “At the conclusion/end of this activity, participants will be able to…” Step 2 Connect step one with an action verb which communicates the performance by the learner. Use verbs which describe an action that can be observed and that are measurable within the teaching time frame (e.g., via a post-test). Step 3: Conclude with the specifics of what the learner will be doing when demostrating achievemnts and mastery of the objectives. Stress what the participants will walk away with the activity. BLOOM'S TAXONOMY: Words to avoid… Appreciate Improve Approach Increase Become Know Believe Learn Grow Think Understand Be aware of Realize Preceive Examples of poorly written learning objectives The following learning objectives do not sufficiently address all required elements and could be improved. Example 1: To communicate effectively with team members in order to manage time effectively to provide appropriate evidence-based care. Comments: It is not clear how ‘effective’ will be measured (i.e. what are the criteria for this?). There is also no clear timeframe of how and when the objective and measurement were to take place. It is not clear how communicating effectively is linked to managing time effectively. Finally, ‘to provide appropriate evidence-based care’ could be the start of a new learning objective. Revised Objective: By the end of the semester, team members will demonstrate effective communication skills by utilizing structured communication tools (e.g., SBAR) during team meetings, resulting in a 20% reduction in missed deadlines for patient care tasks, as measured by a weekly audit. Example 2: Conduct an accurate patient handover to the student group in order to further develop the knowledge and skills of myself and others by weeks 3 and 6. Comments: It is not clear how ‘accurate’ will be measured (i.e. what are the criteria for this?). The statement ‘to further develop knowledge and skills of myself and others’ is too general and could relate to any learning objective – this could be omitted as it does not add anything to the objective. Revised Objective: By weeks 3 and 6, students will conduct patient handovers using a standardized checklist, ensuring 100% compliance with critical handover elements, as evaluated by peer reviews and instructor feedback. Example 3: Wherever possible further develop my knowledge and skills in order to provide effective, evidenced-based nursing care for the duration of placement. Comments: There is also no clear indication of what knowledge and skills are to be focused on and what area of ‘evidence-based nursing care’ is related to this. ‘Further develop’ is not useful unless the student makes clear what the starting point is and this objective does not clearly show how the achievement will be measured. A timeframe is provided but it spans the whole placement – does this mean that the judgment is to be made on the last day? Task: Write at least five nursing objectives…. On the completion of first year BSN Nursing, students will be able to …. Recall fundamental anatomical structures and physiological processes. Recognize common medical abbreviations and terminology. Explain the principles of medication administration. Summarize the pathophysiology of common diseases and conditions. Perform a comprehensive health assessment of a patient. Draft for Grammarly Nursing is a rewarding career that require dedication and compassion. Nurses are responsible for taking care of patient and ensuring their comfort and well-being. They also administer medication and assist doctors in procedures. However, the job can be very stressfull and demanding. Many nurses work long hours, sometimes without breaks, which can lead to burnout. Its important for nurses to take care of themselves so they can provide the best care to their patients. Despite the challenges, many people find nursing to be a fulfilling profession because they make a positive impact on peoples lives.
