Watershed areas: Splenic flexure and caecum are most susceptible to ischaemia. Epidemiology Most common in elderly, linked to: o Atherosclerosis. o Vessel occlusion. In younger populations: Associated with: o Use of contraceptives. o Thrombophilia. o Vasculitis. Clinical Features Symptoms: Abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, occasionally shock. Sigmoidoscopy: Often normal apart from the presence of blood. Management Treatment: Symptomatic. Surgery: Required for complications such as: o Gangrene. o Perforation. o Stricture formation.
