UNIT A Mix & Flow of Matter 1 Section 1 Fluids are used in technological devices and everyday materials 2 WHMIS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System WHMIS is a short form for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a comprehensive plan for providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials used in Canadian workplaces. Information is provided by means of product labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and worker education programs. It deals with labels, hazard classes, material safety data sheets and education and training. 3 WHMIS Propane tanks Oxygen tanks Ether Copper Mixtures Mercury Mixtures Hydrogen dioxide Chlorine Bleach Rat poison Household cleaners Gasoline Aerosol cans Butane lighters Gasoline Aerosol cans Butane lighters 4 WHMIS Household cleaners Hydrochloric acid Mercury Acetone Benzene Lead Product containing chemicals that can cause: - Cancer - Respiratory problems - Organ toxicity - Reproduction effects May cause damage to the aquatic environment. - Agriculture - Mining - Pesticides - Household chemicals 5 WHMIS Gasoline Aerosol cans Butane lighters ANTHRAX Viruses Specific bacteria Salmonella, E-coli Household cleaners Hydrochloric acid Mercury Acetone Benzene Lead 6 WHMIS Updated information Click on each above to access more information 7 HHPS Hazardous Household Product Symb Hazardous Household Products Symbols (HHPS) are found on many household cleaners and on containers in the science laboratory. They alert the user to the potential dangers of that particular product. 8 Hazard Symbols All hazardous materials have a label showing a hazard symbol. CAUTION WARNING DANGER 9 1.2 The Many Uses of Fluids What is a fluid? A fluid is anything that has no fixed shaped and can flow. A fluid can be a liquid or gas since neither have a fixed shape and can flow. 10 Types of Fluids Real Fluid Non-Newtonian Fluids All those fluids that possess viscosity are known as real fluids. All fluids that do not obey Newton’s Law of viscosity. These fluids increase or decrease depending upon the type of liquid and stress applied. (high viscosity = high friction) Newtonian Fluids All fluids that obey Newton’s Law of viscosity. The viscosity should remain consistent when stress is applied. Ex. water, air, mineral oil, alcohol, gasoline 11 Fluids Make it Easier to Use Materials One of the reasons that fluids are so useful is that they make it easier to transport, process, and use different kinds of materials, even if these materials are solids. There are three (3) ways we can use fluids: 1. Slurries 2. Make solids 3. Fluids can hold other materials 12 1. SLURRIES A slurry is a mixture of water and solids and used to transport solids more easily. Example 1 13 Example: Tar Sands of Alberta Tar sands (oil sands) contain a mixture of clay, water, bitumen, sand and heavy black viscous oil. After mining the tar sands are transported to a facility and hot water is used to separate the bitumen from all the other minerals. 14 2. Used to Make Solids Fluids can be used to make solids through superheating so they can be shaped prior to becoming solids. Glass Production Steel Production 15 3. Fluids Can Hold & Transport Other Materials Fluids can hold other materials so they can be spread or moved more easily. Toothpaste 16 Making Synthetic Materials Lab 17
