THROUGH THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS (NCCA) AND THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES (CCP), IT GIVES AWARDS TO THESE NOTABLE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS RECOGNITION OF THEM IS THE “ORDER OF THE NATIONAL ARTIST AWARD” (ORDEN NG PAMBANSANG ALAGAD NG SINING) ON APRIL 27, 1972 UNDER PROCLAMATION NO. 1001. TO GIVE HONOR TO THE FILIPINO INDIVIDUALS WITH OUTSTANDING SHARE IN THE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND CULTURAL IDENTITY OF THE COUNTRY BY MEANS OF THEIR VALUABLE EFFORTS AND CONTRIBUTION IN THE DIFFERENT AREAS. NCCA DOES NOT ONLY FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ARTS BUT ALSO IN THE PRESERVATION OF THE TRADITIONAL ARTS AS WELL BEING THE FOUNDATION OF ART IN THE COUNTRY. TO BE A NATIONAL ARTISTS IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE HIGHEST NATIONAL RECOGNITION GIVEN TO FILIPINO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PHILIPPINE ARTS WHICH IS AWARDED BY THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS TOGETHER WITH CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES. NATIONAL ARTIST OF VISUAL ARTS The Philippines first National Artist. When the Manila Hilton inaugurated its art center on January 23, 1969, with an exhibit of a selection of his works, the official title “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art” was bestowed on Amorsolo.In 1920’s upon returning from his studies abroad, Amorsolo developed the backlighting technique that became his trademark were figures, a cluster of leaves, a spill of hair, the swell of breast, are seen aglow on canvas. This light, Nick Joaquin opines, is the rapture of a sensualist utterly in love with the earth, with the Philippine sun, and is an accurate expression of Amorsolo’s own exuberance. His citation underscores all his years of creative activity which have “defined and perpetuated a distinct element of the nation’s artistic and cultural heritage”. Amorsolo’s major works include the following: Maiden in a Stream (1921)-GSIS collection El Ciego (1928)-Central Bank of the Philippines collection Dalagang Bukid (1936) – Club Filipino collection The Mestiza (1943) – National Museum of the Philippines collection Planting Rice (1946)-UCPB collection; Sunday Morning Going Carlos “Botong” Francisco (November 4, 1912 – March 31, 1969) Francisco revived the art of mural and was considered. to be the most distinguished mural painter for about three decades and was known for using historical events as subject matter for his murals. His other major works include the following: Portrait of Purita, The Invasion of Limahong, Serenade, Muslim Betrothal, Blood Compact, First Mass at Limasawa,The Martyrdom of Rizal, Bayanihan, Magpupukot, Fiesta, Bayanihan sa Bukid, Sandugo. Guillermo E. Tolentino (July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976) Honored as National Artist for Sculpture in 1973 and was known for designing the seal of the Republic of the Philippines, and the gold and bronze medals for the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Tolentino’s works include the “UP Oblation”. OTHER WORKS INCLUDE: The bronze figures of President Quezon at Quezon Memorial Life-size busts of Jose Rizal at UP and UE Marble statue of Ramon Magsaysay in GSIS Building Granolithic of heroic statues representing education, medicine, forestry, veterinary science, fine arts and music at UP. NAPOLEON V. ABUEVA (JANUARY 26, 1930) ABUEVA WAS CONSIDERED TO BE THE FATHER OF MODERN PHILIPPINE SCULPTURE. HE IS SKILLFUL IN CREATING BOTH REPRESENTATIONAL AND MODERN ABSTRACT SCULPTURES USING A WIDE VARIETY OF MATERIALS. HE WAS ALSO KNOWN FOR CREATING “BUOYANT SCULPTURE,” A TYPE OF SCULPTURE TO BE VIEWED FROM THE SURFACE OF A POOL Major works Kaganapan (1953) Kiss of Judas (1955) UP Gateway (1967) Thirty Pieces of Silver. The Transfiguration (Eternal Gardens Memorial Park) (1979) Sandugo (Blood Compact) The Fredesvinda (Fort Canning Park – Singapore) (1982) ******Siyam na Diwata ng Sining (Nine Victorio C. Edades (December 23, 1895 – March 7, 1985). Recognized as the Father of Modern Philippine Painting and was known for using dark somber colors in his paintings. His works focused on factory workers, laborers or other simple towns people. Vicente Manansala (January 22, 1910 – August 22, 1981) He was known for his paintings depicting realistic.. themes using an abstract or a cubist style. He believed that.“the beauty of art is in the process, in the moment Of doing a particular painting, closely associating it with the act of making love. One of the known cubist. Hernando R. Ocampo (April 28, 1911 – December 28, 1978) Ocampo was largely known for his abstract paintings. His works featured shapes bounded with curved lines painted in intense colors. His masterpiece “Genesis” was used as the basis of the design of the curtain of the Cultural Center of the Philippines GENESIS Cesar Legaspi (April 2, 1917 – April 7, 1994) Legaspi was known for utilizing and refining cubism, a style involving breaking parts into geometric shapes, in his paintings. THE BRAVE MODERNS JEREMIAS Elizalde Navarro (May 22, 1924 – June 10, 1999) He was known for his hardwood masks reflecting the human and the animal,abstract paintings in oil and watercolor, and assemblages. He was also known for his fiction works for This Week of the Manila Chronicle, and for his figurative drawings for Lydia Arguilla’s Juan tamad. THE FISHERMEN , 1981 ANG KIUKOK (MARCH 1, 1931 – MAY 9, 2005) HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS PAINTINGS EXPRESSING NATIONALISM AND SOCIOLOGICAL AGENDA DURING THE 60’S THROUGH VIVID CUBISTIC FIGURES. HIS WORKS INCLUDE “GEOMETRIC LANDSCAPE,” “PIETA,” AND THE “SEATED FIGURE.” -EXPRESSIONISTIC CUBISM -KIUKOK HAS BEEN CALLED “ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC FIGURES IN CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ARTS.” BENEDICTO REYES CABRERA — OR BENCAB, AS HE IS MORE POPULARLY KNOWN IS WIDELY HAILED AS A MASTER OF CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ART. HE WAS BORN IN MANILA ON APRIL 10, 1942. BENCAB BEGAN CARVING A NICHE FOR HIMSELF IN MANILA’S ART CIRCLES SHORTLY AFTER RECEIVING HIS BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN FINE ARTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES IN Cabrera was noted as1963. the bestselling painter of his generation of Filipino artists and also known for his sketches of a scavenger named “Sabel,a symbol of dislocation, despair and isolation-the personification of human dignity threatened by life’s circumstance.” ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO IS A, CERAMIST, DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER, SCULPTOR, PAINTER, PHOTOGRAPHER, CULTURAL RESEARCHER, WRITER, AND ARTICULATOR OF PHILIPPINE MUSLIM ART AND CULTURE, A NATIVE OF SULU. THE INDIGENOUS UKKIL, SARIMANOK AND NAGA MOTIFS HAVE BEEN POPULARIZED AND INSTILLED IN THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE FILIPINO NATION AND OTHER PEOPLES AS ORIGINAL FILIPINO CREATIONS, THROUGH HIS WORKS. Francisco Coching (January 29, 1919 – September 1, 1998) Tagged as the “Dean of Filipino Illustrators,” Coching is best known for his work on comics and illustrations which lead to its recognition as popular art. He has influenced cartoonists such as Larry Alcala, Ben Infante and Nestor Redondo. ARTWORK OF ALCUAZ FRANCISCO COCHING JOSE T. JOYA (JUNE 3, 1931 – 1995)-KNOWN ABSTRACTIONIST JOYA IS KNOWN FOR PIONEERING ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM IN THE PHILIPPINES AND GESTURAL PAINTINGS. HIS MOST NOTABLE WORK IS THE GRANADEAN ARABESQUE (1958). HE ALSO REPRESENTED THE PHILIPPINES IN THE 1964 VENICE BIENNALE. ABSTRACTING NATURE BY Jose T. Joya Lauro “Larry” Alcala National Artist for Visual Arts (2018) (18 August 1926-24 June 2002) His comic strips spiced up the slices of Filipino lives with witty illustrations executed throughout his 56 years of cartooning. He created over 500 characters and 20 comic strips in widely circulated publications. Alcala’s most iconic work, Slice of Life, not only made for decades long of widely circulated images of Filipino everyday life, it also symbolically became an experiential way for his followers to find a sense of self in the midst of an often cacophonic, raucous and at odds environment that Filipinos found themselves amidst. He created masterpieces that exemplify an ideal of sublime austerity in expression and form. From the Carnival series of the late 1950s to the recent Cyclist paintings, Luz produced works that elevated Filipino aesthetic vision to new heights of sophisticated simplicity. By establishing the Luz Gallery that professionalized the art gallery as an institution and set a prestigious influence over generations of Filipino artists, Luz inspired and developed a Filipino artistic community that nurtures impeccable designs. Among his other significant paintings are Bagong Taon, Vendador de Flores, Skipping Rope, Candle Vendors, Procession, Self- Portrait, Night Glows,Grand Finale, Cities of the Past, Imaginary Landscapes. His mural painting Black and White is displayed in the lobby of the CCP’s Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater). His sculpture of a stainless steel cube is located in front of the Benguet Mining Corporation Building in Pasig.He became founding director of founding director of Metropolitan Museum of Manila in 1976.Best known for his minimalist, geometric and abstract styles of art and his animated paintings of circus performers, musicians as well as his revered cityscape series.
