Essay #1: Narrative Essay Due Date: February 7th, 2025 Word Count: 1,000-1,500 words (4-6 double spaced pages) Assignment Description For this assignment, you will use a prior experience from your life to construct a larger argument. This can be about a significant event in your life that taught you something about the world, or it can be about something mundane that speaks to a larger truth. This essay serves as an opportunity for you to express yourself and to show a cause that matters to you. As this assignment is built around a narrative, keep in mind that it should include things such as sensory detail, emotion, and a narrative arc. It is perfectly okay, even good, to be experimental with this! These details will strengthen your argument while creating a work that nobody else could have made. Workshop Process You will be given multiple opportunities to discuss this assignment both with your peers and with me. We will have time in class where you will read and give feedback on each other’s essays according to the parameters below. Additionally, we will set class time aside for everyone in class to have conferences with me about their work to ensure you have the feedback you need to make your essay as great as it can be. Grading Criteria How does your narrative tie into the larger argument made in your piece? How strong is that connection? Is your narrative grounded in a setting? Do we get a strong sense of that setting through sensory details? Does your piece have a recognizable structure? Is that structure effective in conveying the narrative of the piece? Have you made an argument? How much evidence do you have to support your argument? Do you have a conclusion that finds resolution in the narrative and argument?
