Summary

These notes provide an overview of the parasympathetic nervous system, focusing on the cranial nerves involved and the associated ganglia. The document includes questions for further study. The information is relevant for understanding the workings of the autonomic system, including its role in pupil dilation and glandular function.

PARASYMPATHETICS Prof  Dr  MT   AUTONOMIC  NERVOUS  SYSTEM     Adapta8on  of  an  organism’s  internal  state  to  changes   in  the  environment  without  conscious  effort     innervates  smooth  muscle,  cardiac  muscle,  glands;  also   carries  the  GVA  fibers  from  viscera,  blood  vessels  and  glands   to  central  nervous  system.     ANS  is  a  two  neuron  pathway:   1)  pre-‐ganglionic  neurons  have  their  cell  bodies  located  in  the   CNS   2)  post-‐ganglionic  neurons  have  their  cell  bodies  located  in   peripheral  ganglia.   Parasympathetics restful or energy conserving division- “rest and digest” Sympathetics attentive state in which one is able to “fight and flight” CRANIAL  PARASYMPATHETICS   III,  VII,  IX,  X   OCULOMOTOR  NERVE  (ciliary  ganglion>pupilla)   FACIAL  NERVE  (pterygopala8ne&submandibular   ganglia>lacrimal  gland,  submandibular  and   sublingual  glands)   GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL  NERVE  (o8c  ganglion>paro8d   gland)   VAGUS  NERVE  (intramural  ganglia>all  the  organs  up   to  leY  colic  flexure  of  the  large  intes8nes)   OCULOMOTOR  NERVE     CILIARY   GANGLION     Oculomotor  N   FACIAL  NERVE   Branches  of  Facial  Nerve  in the  Facial  Canal   1. Greater petrosal n Preganglionic parasymp fibers to lacrimal, nasal, and palatal glands (postgang fibers carried by the zygomatic n of V2) 2. Chorda tympani Preganglionic parasymp fibers to submandibular and sublingual glands Special Visceral Afferents from the taste buds 3. Nerve to stapedius GANGLIA  RELATED  TO  FACIAL  NERVE   PTERYGOPALATINE  GANGLION   SUBMANDIBULAR  GANGLION   PSG SSG MR GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL   NERVE   OTIC  GANGLION-‐ Glossopharyngeal   Nerve   Lesser petrosal nerve (given off by the tympanic plexus-of CNIX as its psps component) emerges the skull from the oval foramen and makes synapses at the otic ganglion. Postsynaptic fibers are carried in the auriculotemporal br of the V3 to the parotid gland Medial and lateral views Sensory: skin of the external acoustic meatus and mucosa of laryngopharynx and larynx. GVA to the heart and abdominal viscera Special Sensory: Taste sensation to the tongue Motor: Provides motor innervation to the majority of the muscles of the pharynx, soft palate and larynx Parasympathetic division: Innervates the smooth muscle of the trachea, bronchi and gastro- intestinal tract (up to the distal 1/3rd of transverse colon), regulates heart rhythm and provides visceral sensation to the organ Vagus Nerve SACRAL  PARASYMPATHETICS   (Nervi  erigentes)   S2-S4 innervate the area starting the distal 1/3rd of transverse colon all the way down http://www.slideshare.net/Mohammad-Hadi-Farjoo/introduction-to-autonomic-pharmacology http://www.slideshare.net/Mohammad-Hadi-Farjoo/introduction-to-autonomic-pharmacology http://www.slideshare.net/Mohammad-Hadi-Farjoo/introduction-to-autonomic-pharmacology -PSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPSPS What type of fibers are forming the cranial nerves? Which of them are conveying parasympathetic (PS) fibers? Which of the cranial nerve is related to the otic ganglion? Which of the cranial nerve is formed by all GSA, GSE, and GVE fibers? What happens if the short ciliary nerves get damaged? Where is the pterygopalatine ganglion? Which nerve synapse at the otic ganglion? Which nerve innervates the lacrimal gland? Which nerve gives ride to the facial nerve to innervate tongue (related to the SSA) What is the relation of the parotid gland and the mandibular nerve? What is the relation of the parotid gland and the middle ear? Does facial nerve go all the way to the lacrimal gland? Which of the ganglions related to the submandibular and sublingual glands? Is there any connection between the nerves innervating the parotid gland and the nerve/s innervating the submandibular and sublingual glands? What happens if you don’t learn anatomy well :D Which of the cranial nerves conveying PS fibers also carries SSA fibers? Which of the cranial nerves conveying PS fibers also carries GSE fibers? Which of the PS ganglia is located within the infratemporal fossa? Where is ciliary ganglion? Where are you?
