Alyanna Claire Monicit MSSW-1 Gender-Based Perspective There are different perspective guide for professionals in the field of Social Work to use in social problems. Of these, gender perspective is most meaningful for me as a future social worker. This is because, apart from the fact that Filipinos are of diverse cultures, we also embrace and accept diverse genders. Our society is gradually accepting and realizing various gender identities. Due to this, it is essential that future social workers such as myself learn and adapt to the issues that individuals encounter according to their gender. Looking at things in a point of view of gender enables us to better serve marginalized communities, foster inclusivity, and address current inequalities in our society. The Gender-Based perspective is one of the most important social work frameworks, especially for an individual who wants to help society in a positive way. This perspective considers gender as a social construct shaped by diverse cultural, political, and economic forces. It knows that gender is not only constructed by biology. It is constructed by other social categories such as race, class, and sexual orientation. This combination varying experiences of privilege and oppression for individuals. As a social worker, it is necessary to be attuned to these experiences in order to be of assistance. By applying a gender approach in social work, I can counter and overcome traditional and outdated gender roles and stereotypes that tend to restrict what people can do. These roles have always dictated what us acceptable for men, women, and other genders, and in most cases, restricted their options and chances. For instance, women and LGBTQ+ community tend to be discriminated against and restricted in education, employment, and protection. For example, in my alma mater, there was an issue where gay men fought to have the right to be respected for who they are, especially in having long hair in ROTC. Even though they fought for it, they have an obligation as a student to comply school policy. This experience shows the conflict between personal rights and school rules, especially on how individuals express their gender. With a gender perspective, I am in a position to question such regulations and advocate for reform, whereby all individuals have equal opportunities and justice. In terms of violence and harassment cases, for instance, having a gender approach allows me to provide better support and advocacy to the victims. Additionally, a gender approach facilitates social justice, empowerment and care through an understanding of trauma. These values ensure that assistance is attentive to the unique needs of the person and includes all genders. asd s Being a future social worker, applying a gender perspective as a future social worker will contribute to making society equitable and just. It will enable me not only to combat prevailing prejudices but to help those most injured by them. It is crucial in creating a world where all human being, irrespective of gender, can reach their full potential and live without violence and discrimination. T asd da
