BATAYAN NG PAGIGING ISANG PILIPINO ZEIA BEATRIZ C. VALENCIA, RPM, RPSY IPINAGMAMALAKI MO BA NA IKAW AY PILIPINO? SUGGESTED READING MAKING SENSE OF BEING AND BECOMING FILIPINOS: AN INDIGENOUS PSYCHOLOGY PERSPECTIVE BY: JAY A. YACAT ARE YOU A FILIPINO? WHY DO YOU SAY SO? NATIONAL IDENTITY AS A POLITICAL ASPECT AND A CULTURAL IDENTITY Sinha (1997) identified four threads that define indigenous psychological perspectives: a) arise from within the culture; b) reflect local behaviors; c) interpret data from a local frame of reference; and d) yield results that are locally relevant. In essence, indigenous psychology aims to produce knowledge and practice that are culturally meaningful and relevant. PINAGMULAN Socio-political origins Being born in the Philippines Residing in the Philippines A Filipino citizen KINALAKHAN Cultural roots Participation and being immersed in a cultural milieu acknowledged as Filipino "Ethnic identification devices" (speaking a language, diskarte > asal at halaga) KAMALAYAN Consciousness Awareness of the self as Filipino Acceptance and pride of membership in the category "Filipino" - psychological dimension Adolescents residing in other countries who still identify themselves as Filipinos FILIPINO-NESS / PAGKA-PILIPIN O THE QUALITY OF BEING FILIPINO PILIPINO SA PANGALAN VS PILIPINO SA PUSO PILIPINO SA PANGALAN Individual recognizes that he or she is a Filipino but may not be involved in activities that highlight that identity. PILIPINO SA PUSO individual considers Filipino-ness as a conviction (paninindigan). Filipino-ness has been internalized or integrated with the loob. COVAR (1995) USED A MANUVU JAR AS A METAPHOR FOR FILIPINO PERSONHOOD. ACCORDING TO HIM, IT HAS THREE ELEMENTS: LOOB, LABAS, AND LALIM (DEPTH). THUS, PILIPINO SA PANGALAN WOULD IMPLY A SUPERFICIAL (MABABAW) INTEGRATION AND PILIPINO SA PUSO WOULD SUGGEST A DEEPER (MALALIM) INTEGRATION INTO THE LOOB. THE DIFFERENCE IN PILIPINO SA PANGALAN AND PILIPINO SA PUSO LIE IN THE ACTIVITY (GALAW) OF THE LOOB OR THE LACK OF IT. THE FOLLOWING SUMMARIZES OTHER RESPONSES BY THE PARTICIPANTS AS PART OF THE GALAW OF PILIPINO SA PUSO. Recognizes and accepts the self as Filipino' Takes pride in being Filipino Recognizes and accepts fellow Filipinos' Has empathy for fellow Filipinos' Involved in the affairs of fellow Filipinos WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO PRACTICE ON THE LOCAL CONTEXT? INDIGENOUS PSYCHOLOGY WHAT IS INDIGENOUS PSYCHOLOGY? Kim and Berry (1993) define indigenous psychology “the scientific study of human behavior or mind that is native, that is not transported from other regions, and that is designed for its people”. Indigenous Psychology is an intellectual movement across the globe, based on the following factors: 1.A reaction against the colonization/hegemony of Western psychology. 2.The need for non-Western cultures to solve their local problems through indigenous practices and applications. 3.The need for a non-Western culture to recognize itself in the constructs and practices of psychology. 4.The need to use indigenous philosophies and concepts to generate theories of global discourse.
