INTRODUCTION TO OPTICS AND LIGHT Dr. Abdul-wahid Nafea LIGHT Represents the visible wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation by the human eye. 380– 750 nm Shorter wavelength Higher Frequency More energy Longer wavelength Lower Frequency Less energy OPTICAL MEDIUM It is a transmission medium through which light propagates. The density of optical media determines the speed of light wave that pass through it. Denser medium makes the speed of light slower. While lighter media makes the speed of light faster. TYPES OF OPTICAL MEDIA Opaque medium Transparent medium Translucent medium OPTICAL DENSITY It is the ratio between the speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in a certain medium. Optical density for the medium = Refractive index of the medium LIGHT WITH OBJECTS 1- Objects that do not allow a ray of light to pass through them but absorb it completely are called opaque objects and are usually black in color. 2- Objects that completely reflect a ray of light are called light-reflecting objects. 3- Objects that allow the greatest amount of light to pass through are called objects that are transparent to light. 4- Objects that allow part of the light to pass through, absorb another part, and reflect the last part are called visible colored-objects.
