MG4031 Wk.01 Lec.01 Management: The process in which managers engage to achieve the organisational goals through the deployment of human, financial, knowledge and physical assets. Requires knowledge in planning, controlling, organising, staffing, motivating and leading. Organisation: a system that is designed and operated to achieve specific objectives. Managers: Individuals within organisations whose principal aim is to achieve organisational goals by holding positions of authority and making decisions about the allocation of resources. Should be efficient and effective. Effective managers identify the important objectives and focus everyone’s efforts toward the achievement of those objectives. Top/Strategic: These managers are responsible for the overall mission and direction of the organisation. Top managers shape organisational goals, provide resources, monitor progress and make strategic decisions. In this sense they act as the interface between the organisation and its external environment. They represent the organisation at outside meetings and develop customer and supplier relationships. E.g. CEO, COO, President, Chairman, Director. Middle/Tactical: Translation of general plans and objectives given by the top to specific activities. Bridgers between top and front line. Middle managers integrate the activities of different work groups to ensure co-ordination. E.g. Plant Manager, Operation Manager, Superintendent. Front Line/Operational: Direct, supervise and manage employees and resources. Implementers. Skills Needed: (Skills are the abilities that managers develop as a result of knowledge, information, practice and aptitude.) 1. Technical Skills: Ability to do a specialised task involving a particular method/process. 2. Interpersonal/Human Skills: Communicating, motivating. 3. Conceptual Skills: the ability to see the organisation as a whole, recognising complex and dynamic issues, examining factors that influence any problems and resolving such situations. Other skills include time management, prioritisation, cross-cultural and delegation.
