▪ Differentiate the types of forces involve in plate movement ▪ Identify what forces are involve GOALS in making the plates move and stopping the plates from moving ▪ Realize the importance of maintaining balance or stability WHY? MECHANISM OF PLATE MOVEMENTS 1. DRIVING FORCE – either push tectonic plates toward each other or pull them apart 1.1 MANTLE CONVECTION – heat energy dissipates in a circular motion 1.2 SLAB PULL – the rest of the plate to which the slab is attached to is being pulled in as well 1.3 SLAB SUCTION – occurs between two colliding plates, mantle flow exerts shear traction on the base of the plate 1.4 RIDGE PUSH – gravity push the plate down the ridge and a new crust is formed 2. RESISTING FORCE – against the driving force 2.1 SLAB RESISTANCE When plates collide at a plate boundary in a subduction zone, the force from the mantle will resist movement 2.2 COLLISIONAL RESISTANCE occurs where a heavy plate is pulled into the mantle but resist subduction because of friction 2.3 TRANSFORM FAULT RESISTANCE The broken plates slide past to each other and form a transform fault 2.4 DRAG FORCE Resists movements from lithospheric plates WHY? STABILITY ▪ Differentiate the types of forces involve in plate movement ▪ Identify what forces are involve in GOALS making the plates move and stopping the plates from moving ▪ Realize the importance of maintaining balance or stability
