Measuring Time in History First Form History Prepared by: Daynea Specific Objectives 1. Define the following concepts: time, chronology, and sequence, A.D., B.C., Decade, Century, Periods/Ages, Millennium 2. Describe how time is calculated by historian. 3. Identify specific years in a particular century. 3. Value the importance of timelines as historical markers. 4. Value the significance of historical events in order of occurrence Questions: What comes to mind when you hear the word “TIME”? What is a timeline? How do historians measure time? TASK - Put the following words into order – shortest to longest secon centur hour y d decad ye wee mont k e ar millenniu day h minu How is time divided ? decad 100 years e centu 1000 years ry week 10 years millenniu 365 days m ye 7 days What is a timeline? A timeline is the presentation of a chronological sequence of events along a drawn line that enables a viewer to understand temporal relationships quickly. Historians often talk about years as being BC or AD. This is another way of dividing time. This is a way of making large amounts of time easier to think about when learning History. Inl History, it is aways good to refer dates or periods of time to particular events. For this reason Christians use the Birth of Christ as a reference. BC- Before Christ (before the birth of Christ) AD- Anno Domini- (Which is the Latin meaning- in the Year of our Lord) In recent times, there has been a push to replace the use of the Christian references with more religious tolerant terms, so that people of different faiths are not offended. As a result, the following terms have been created to replace BC & AD years Questions: 1. Which event is used as a reference point to measure time? 2. How are BC years counted? 3. At which point do AD years begin? 4. What year was the birth of Jesus? State the meaning for the following abbreviations : A.D A.D - The term Anno Domini is Medieval Latin and means "in the year of the Lord B.C B.C (before Christ) before Christ is used in the Christian calendar to show a particular B.C.E number of years before the year when Christ is believed to have been born. C.E BCE (Before the Common Era). CE (Common Era) Questions: 1. What do you notice about the BC years? 2. Which year is the oldest? 3. Which year is the most recent? 4.Since BC years count backwards, 10 years later from BC 400 would be what year? 5. 10 years later from the year 200 AD would be which year? Figure it out!! Write out these dates into the correct order: 100BC 1780AD 79BC 100AD 10AD 1550BC 5BC 1980AD 75AD 1560AD We are living in the 21st century. This is because it is the 21st century after Jesus was born in year 0. This is because... The year 0 to 99AD were the First Century. The years 100AD to 199AD were the Second Century. This means that... The year 175AD is in the __________ Century The year 369AD is in the __________ Century What is a century? A period of a hundred years. How do historians work out centuries? The concept of time When we speak of time in History, we talk about years, decades, centuries and time periods with assigned names of historical significance. Century theory Have you ever wondered how it is we are in the year 2000 plus, example 2019 yet we are in the twenty first (21st) century? According to the Century Theory, we are always a hundred years behind the century in which we are. Let us work it out and see. 1st Century= Yr 0- Yr 99 (100 years in between) 2nd Century= Yr 100- yr 199 (100 years in between) 3rd Century = Yr 200- Yr 299 (100 years in between) 4th Century = Yr 300- Yr 399 (100 years in Activity – put this list of years into the correct century 2008AD. 950AD 33AD 1968AD 1789AD 1066AD 1848AD 54BC 410AD 1472AD WHAT IS A TIMELINE? A time line is a diagram that shows the order of events within a period of time. Most time lines are divided into sections in which the years are evenly spaced. In some cases, however, a spread of time may be too long to show all of the years in even spaces. To save space, a period of time may be omitted from the timeline. Where this happens, a slanted or jagged line appears on the timeline to show a break in the even spacing of events. A timeline also labels historical events. Each event on the timeline appears beside the date when the event took place. Sometimes events and their dates are shown on a single timeline. In other cases, two or more timelines are stacked one on top of the other. These are called multilevel timelines. They help you to compare events in different places at certain periods of time. Guided Discussion How has timelines helped historians and learners understand the chronological order of events? READING EVENTS ON A TIMELINE PLACING EVENTS ON A TIMELINE HUMAN TIMELINE INSTRUCTION: Students will be given specific dates and will be asked to arrange themselves in a human timeline in chronological order. Arrange yourselves in a timeline! Look at your year and place yourselves in the correct order. Homework Activity Make your own timeline Create a basic timeline of your life so far. Include the following events: 1. When you were born. 2. Your first day at preschool. 3. The birth of your brother/sisters (if you have any). 4. When you got your pet (If you have one). 5. When you joined a club/team/scouts/band etc. 6. Your first day at primary school. 7. Your first day at secondary school. 8. Include dates where possible
