His own coup’d etat… NAPOLEON BONAPARTE DOMESTIC POLICIES He set up a fairer tax system. He was not faithful, but he did make peace with the Catholic Church in order to stabilize things. He set up a system of public schools. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE DOMESTIC POLICIES Before he assumed power, there were over 300 different legal system in France. There were many injustices. He made a single set of laws for the entire nation, known as the Napoleonic Codes Civil codes. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE DOMESTIC POLICIES Within his government, people were promoted based on ability alone. He created a new aristocracy based on state service. He did away with freedom of the press and other liberties. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HIS EMPIRE At first, he signed a peace treaty with the nations that were at war with France (allies). Then, started another war and expanded his empire. He mainly conquered the countries that surrounded France. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE BRITAIN Because of its navy and being an island, England was the only nation able to hold off Napoleon. He tried to stop other countries from trading with them, but this failed. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE LOUISIANA TERRITORY To raise money. To cut losses in America. To increase America’s power as a British rival! NAPOLEON BONAPARTE NATIONALISM Nationalism is the cultural identity of a people who share a common language, religion, and symbols. The French were the 1st to demonstrate this and other countries learned from it. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE NATIONALISM Other countries became more nationalistic because they learned to hate the French. Also, they learned what a nation in arms could do. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HIS 1st DEFEAT: RUSSIA He invaded Russia with 600,000 men. They beat the Russians, who burned their own stuff to prevent the French from using it, all the way back to Moscow. Scorched Earth policy. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HIS 1st DEFEAT: RUSSIA After capturing Moscow, the Russians burned it. Napoleon and his troops retreated back to France in the harsh Russian winter. Only 40,000 of his troops made it back. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE EXILE IN ELBA Because France was now weak, other European nations attacked. Paris was captured and Napoleon was sent into exile to the island of Elba. The nations restored Louis XVIII, brother of Louis XVI, to the throne. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HE RETURNS! His troops _____him with open arms! He soon retakes France and goes after his enemies. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HE RETURNS! However, he is finally defeated at the Battle of waterloo by the Duke of Wellington and von Blucher. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HIS DEATH! He was exiled to the island of St.Helena where he died 6 years later. CONGRESS OF VIENNA SECURITY AND PEACE! The Europeans held a series of meetings, headed by Prince Albert Metternich of Austria, to ensure long lasting peace. CONGRESS OF VIENNA NATIONALISM! Many countries were placed under foreign rule which resulted in feelings of nationalism. CONGRESS OF VIENNA ACCOMPLISHMENTS! Royal families reinstated. Balance of power. France surrounded by strong neighbors.
