Discuss Talk togther about the following points in small groups or pairs: Why you want to be an EFL teacher Your English language learning experience Your English teachers at school – good and bad points The activities you did in the English class – good and bad Do you consider yourself a successful language learner. Why / not? Successful Language Learners Jack C. Richards on successful language learners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sROpRYnwrL0 Characteristics of a successful language learner Success means different things to different people Setting goals is valuable, but it is more important to have a ‘visión’ of yourself in the future – being able to see oneself as competent language learner in the future What does success as a language learner mean to you? What is your vision of yourself as a competent language learner? Characteristics of successful language learners A high tolerance for ambiguity: language is an art, not a science. There are no hard and fast rules and a lot depends on context. Questions asked by learners with low tolerance for ambiguity: What exactly does that mean? When do I use X rather than Y (earth/soil)? Rules are helpful, but we have to accept that they are often broken. Characteristics of successful language learners They are not afraid of asking questions, experimenting (‘Can you say….?’) and making mistakes (essential) Shy, reserved people in their own language will need more time, but they are still listening and reading, working things out, and absorbing language. Characteristics of successful language learners They are good at organizing, recording and remembering information. They use phones, tablets and/or notebooks to jot down new information. They are active readers (underlining, highlighting, notes in the margins etc.) They are interested in other cultures and communities. They have a lot of curiosity. They take every opportunity to communicate or engage with the language (whether speaking to others or reading a book, for example). Characteristics of successful language learners They see the teacher as a valuable resource with experience and expertise, but they accept that the teacher is not a walking dictionary/ grammar book etc. They realize the need to learn autonomously outside the classroom, and on a regular basis – preferably every day. Strategies on which highly successful learners draw A combination of (among others): Learning explicit rules to help them Learning ‘chunks’ of ready-made language (phrases, sentences, questions), which helps with fluency Developing a ‘feel’ for the language – instincts about regularities and patterns (word stress on two syllable nouns, adjectives and verbs) Immersion in the language (labelling things, listening to podcasts in English, watching series in English, reading the newspaper in English etc) What can we learn from “successful” language learners? Based on Ian Cook’s talk at the British Council in Moscow, 29/03/2017 https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=successful+languag e+learners&&view=detail&mid=ACE1A684679C541C011BAC E1A684679C541C011B&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos% 2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dsuccessful%2Blanguage%2Blearners%26F ORM%3DHDRSC4 Assignment What I have learned from my language learning experience and success that can help me become a good EFL teacher
