Stages of Reading Development Stage 0- you call it stage 0 because in this stage there is no reading that occurs yet; however this doesn't mean that this stage should be taken for granted. So what do we have to know about this stage. What takes place in this stage is that the child demonstrates his desire to learn the language of his environment. And how do you think does the child demonstarte this. When the child begins to utter incomprehisnsible words. That is an indication that the child wants to communicate with the people around him. and as parents of these children. So in other words, before the child learns how to read, the child should first learn how to speak. So when the child starts to utter incomprehensible words, that is the best time for you to teach the child how to speakcorrectly. And this is something that seldom happens. Usually when the child is beginning to learn how to speak, it is the people around the child who adjust to the child's language and not the other way around. And what happens is as the child grows, he begins to acquire his own set of vocabulary. And this should not happen. Stage 0 may also be referred to as the "I want" stage. The child should learn how to speak correctly. The child should be able to learn how to say words properly, the child should know how to sing the different letters of the alphabet. Stage 1- Now that the child knows the different letters of the alphabet, and now that the child knows how to say words properly, the child is ready for stage 1. stage 1 is referred to as initial reading. You call it initial reading because this is where the child begins to learn how to read. And in this stage, the child begins to realiza that the different letters correspond to different symbols. In this stage the child learns that the different words taiught to him/her correspond to a set of symbols. That is why you call it initial reading. Reading begins when the child is able to assign names to symbols seen in print. This is also the best time to make the students learn how to spell a few words. You buy them flashcards with pictures and then the pictures should be spelled. Stage 2- stage 2 is also referred to as the confirmation and fluency stage. You call it confirmation because whatever skills the child learned in stage 1, he puts into practice in stage 2. whatever skill was learned is confirmed or validated in stage 2. that is why you call it stage confirmation. You aso call it fluency stage because as the child practices reading, the child develops fluency remember fluency is when a person is fast in reading. For example usually children who are in this stage are those chioldren who are fond of fairy tale books. Have you experienced being boutght one? Usually in stage 2, the child would be exposed for example to the stoy of cinderella. First night, the parent would tell the story to the child and as the parent does this the child is shown the different pictures. The chilkd enjoys it. Just wait till the 2nd night when it's time for story telling, the child will again pick the same story, cinderella. And this tym, the child does not just appreciate the pictures, the child also tries to read the sentences telling something about the picture. The next night, same story again, cinderella again. And as what seems to be an endless night continues, if you will notice, the child begins to be fast in reading the cinderella story. So there is a change in speed. Fluency phase. But f course in this stage you can't expect the child to understandwhat he/she ios reading. He just reads and reads aloud evry word that he she sees. If stage 0 is I want and stage 1 is I start. Stage 2 is I improve stage. Stage 3- now at the latter end of stage 2 the child will eventually realiza that hey okay the words that I am reading actually says something. That is the start of stage 3. stage 3 is called reading for learning the new. Because as the child realizes that the words mean something the child also realizes that everything he reads will contain specific pieces of information in other words the child begins to look for other reading materials read them and try to learn something from it. So whatever book he grabs, he reads and try to understand. And every reading material he reads, he acquires knowledge and this knowledge would make up the first few sets of knowledge that is retained in his/her mind. That is why you would notice that some children, at some pint in time, would like to read everything that they see. It's because they enjoy the idea that they learn something. And this is a very crucial stage because if they get exposed to materials that are not appropriate for their age, they learn from it. Like pornographica materialas and the like. Stage 3 is also referred to as the I acquire stage. Stage 4- is also referred to as multiple viewpoint. So what haopens in stage 4 is that whatever the child learns in stage 3, is challenged in stage 4. in stage 4, the child begins to learn things that would either validate or negate whatever he learned in stage 3. for example, in stage 3, the child learned about hansel and gretel. In stage 4 as he becomes exposed to a wider range of reading materials, he learns that in some versions hansel and gretel was killed in the end by their father. In other words in stage 4 the child learns that there are always two sides of the story. So whatever the child learns in stage 3 is challenged in stage 4. that is why you call it multiple viewpoint or we may also refer to it as the I explore stage. If in stage 3 the child learns that there are 3 phases of matter, in stage 4 he learns that there are also other phases of matter. Stage 5- the last but definitely not the least, stage 5 is what you call the construiction and reconstruction stage. So whatever additional information the child learns in stage 4 rhe child begins to choose which version of the story should he be believing in. construct Stages of Reading Development Stage 0- you call it stage 0 because in this stage there is no reading that occurs yet; however this doesn't mean that this stage should be taken for granted. Schemata is considered plural of the singular word schema So when you say schema this serves as the weapon of the reader everytime he engages himself in reading a text The reader in this context can actually be compared to a soldier. When a soldier goes to war he doesn't bring himself only to the battlefield. In order to ensure his survival,He has to bring or carry with him a lot of things,. And what are those things, weapons like, guns, binoculars, what else c\. Now just like the soldier, the reader everytime he reads sets out on the battlefield. And in order to ensure that the reader understands the text, he should have weapons with him too. And this weapon is in the form of schemata. The schemata is the sum total of all the knowledge that a person acquires over time. And the schemata are made up o the person's experiences and other learnings from all the things he has encountered throughout his life. These may refer to the building blocks of knowledge that a person acquires as he matures as he grows up. Schemata may be considered as the sum total of a person's experiences and acquired info from different things that he/she has encountered throughout his lifetime. For example In the past, you may have experienced being slapped in the face by your parents simply because you imitated a word that you overheard from adults. So out of that experience, you learn something, that it is bad to say the words, "gago", "PI" and all the other bad words. (You may prolong the discussion here by asking them different experiences they had which made them learn something. Always reiterate that whatever learning it is, it becomes \[art of their schemata now. And the fact that they can still share this in class is an indication that it forms part of their background knowledge already) Collectively, all of those learnings that you get out of your experiences and all of those other pieces of information that you acquire as you grow up they all become part of your schemata and when you start reading, you always bring them with you
