Conflict Management Today we will evaluate conflict-management styles (e.g., collaboration, avoidance, accommodation, compromise) and their impact on a situation. 1 What is Conflict? ➢Conflict – A disagreement on issues. • Substantive issues (JOB ISSUES) regarding goals, allocation of resources, distribution of rewards, policies and procedures, and job assignments. • Emotional issues (PERSONAL ISSUES) arising from feelings of anger, distrust, dislike, fear, and resentment, as well as personality clashes. Conflict, if well managed, can actually help promote high performance, creativity, and innovation. 2 Good vs. Bad Conflict ➢Functional conflict … – Moderately intense conflict. – Constructive and stimulates people toward greater work efforts, cooperation, and creativity. ➢Dysfunctional conflict … – Low-intensity and very high-intensity conflict. – Destructive and hurts task performance.
