The Pardoner’s Tale Presented by: Glenn Michael M. Relabo Rey Anthony Caccam Definition of Terms 1. Avarice - is an intense and often excessive desire for wealth or material gain. 2. Debauchery- refers to excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures, often involving actions that are considered morally or socially unacceptable. 3. Grisly- causing horror or disgust. 4.. Lechery - excessive or inappropriate sexual desire or behavior. 5. Sepulcher- is a tomb or burial chamber, small, usually stone structure, where corpses are placed. 6. Pestilence- refers to a fatal epidemic disease that spreads rapidly and causes widespread suffering or death. 7. Troth- loyal or pledged faithfulness. The Pardoner, from Ellesmere Characters Manuscript of Chaucer The narrator of the tale, he is a church official who sells indulgences and relics. He is depicted as The Pardoner - greedy and corrupt, using his position to exploit people’s fears of damnation for personal gain, all of this is told during the prologue of the story. Characters Within The Tale Three Rioters - The main characters in the tale. They are young men who are depicted as reckless and irresponsible. They set out to find and kill Death who killed their old friend. Death - An infamous thief who was said to kill his/her targets in their sleep by stabbing them in the heart. Said to have killed around a thousand men of which was the rioters’ old friend. Old Man - A mysterious figure whom the rioters encounter during their quest. He was the one who told the rioters the location of Death. He symbolizes death and the inevitability of mortality, guiding the rioters to their eventual fate. Publican and - Warns the three rioters about Death. Conclusion The pardoner is a hypocrite and The pardoner states that greed is the charlatan preaching about the source of all evil in the world and that he values of morality and ethics but denounces it, but in an action contrary to abuses the fear of the people so his statement he states that he has relics that he can gain wealth but still, that are available for purchase and asks in his own words: “For though I the host to kiss him and pay respects. am a wholly vicious man, don’t think I can’t tell moral tales.
