EARTH SCIENCE LA TIERRA GRADE 10 - QUARTER I Objectives 1. Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts. 2.Describe the different types of plate boundaries. 3.Explain the different processes that occur along the plate boundaries. Overview In Grade 7 Focus on the enviroment of the Philippines as a whole The country's location near the equator and along the Ring of Fire influences what makes up the Philippine environment (e.g. climate, natural resources, etc.) Locate places using a coordinate system In Grade 7 In Grade 8 Because it is located along the Ring of Fire , the Philippines is prone to earthquakes. Using the models, explain how quakes are generated by faults. Using PHIVOLCS maps, find out if there are active faults in the community. In Grade 8 In Grade 9 Because it is located along the Ring of Fire , the Philippines is home to many volcanoes Using the models, explain what happens when volcanoes erupt Describe the different types of volcanoes Differentiate active from inactive volcanoes Explain how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use In Grade 9 PLATE TECTONICS, BOUNDARIES AND THE MECHANISMS OF THE EARTH What are the 4 subsystems of the Earth? Earth THE BLUE PLANET AN IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OUTSIDE LAYER OF THE EARTH IT IS LESS THAN 1% OF EARTH’S VOLUME TEMPERATURE : UP TO 5,000 DEGREE CELSIUS WHERE ASTHENOSPHERE CAN BE FOUND IT CONSISTS OF HOT, DENSE, IRON AND MAGNESIUM- RICH SOLID ROCK 2,900 KM THICK EARTH’S LAYER THAT HAS TWO FORMS COMPOSED OF BASALT AND GRANITE IT REGULATES THE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH LAYER THAT HAS 2 SUBLAYERS MADE OF NICKEL, IRON AND MOLTEN ROCK IT IS EXTREMELY THIN, COLD AND BRITTLE PRESSURES HERE ARE IMMENSE SPINS A BIT FASTER THAN THE REST OF THE PLANET Lithosphere The solid part of the Earth The Crust Outside layer of the Earth Layer which humans and animals live and plants grow It is less than 1% of Earth’s volume The Crust Made of solid rock, mostly basalt and granite. Two types of crust; oceanic and continental. The Mantle Lies below the crust and is up to 2,900 km thick. It is a semi- solid magma layer where asthenosphere can be found The Mantle It has a viscoelastic flow It consists of hot, dense, iron and magnesium- rich solid rock. Upper and Lower Mantle Asthenosphere Is the hotter upper mantle below the lithospheric plate Able to flow, slowly Composed of peridotite Is a viscoelastic solid, NOT liquid!!! The Core The center of the earth and is made up of two parts: the liquid outer core and solid inner core. The outer core is made of nickel, iron and molten rock. The Core Temperature : up to 5,000 degree Celsius. Very hot, very dense layer It regulates the temperature of the Earth QUICK QUESTION What are some ways to have a healthier planet? Modes of Heat Transfer Per cell, BRING THE FF: Mini PT #1 : Convection Cell Materials: Transparentplastic container, 2 food colors (red and blue), hot water, tap water, 1 paper cup for hot water THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! LET’S HAVE A LESSON RECAP THROUGH EXIT TICKETS CREATE A QUIZ QUESTION BASED ON LAST WEEK’S LESSON. WHAT WOULD THE QUESTION BE? WHAT IS CONVECTION? Convection The transfer of heat by the movement of liquid or gas where hot air rises, allowing cooler air to sink and be heated again The process is called Convection Current QUICK QUESTION What drives the Earth’s plates to move? Theories on the movement of the lithosphere: Plate Tectonics Continental Drift Theory Theory 02 03 Seafloor Spreading Theory 01 Evidence of Plate Movements: Seafloor Spreading Theory What is Seafloor Spreading Theory? States that the seafloor is continuously spreading and the extra crust gets recycled into the mantle A sounding gear called SONAR produced new evidence of what the seafloor looked like. It bounced sound waves off the seafloor to determine its depth and features. Harry Hammond Hess A geologist from Princeton University. He published his theory in History of Ocean Basins (1962), and it came to be called "seafloor spreading." Harry Hammond Hess He discovered that the bottom of the sea was not as smooth as expected, but full of canyons, trenches, and volcanic sea mountains. He realized that the Earth's crust had been moving away on each side of oceanic ridges QUICK QUESTION If new ocean floor is being formed near the ridge, what will happen to the old oceanic crust materials? QUICK QUESTION Based on your understanding about seafloor spreading theory, is earth getting larger and wider when plates drift away from each other? Evidence of Plate Movements: Continental Drift Theory Alfred Lothar Wegener A German polar researcher, geophysicist, and meteorologist. Hypothesizing the Continental Drift Theory in 1912 Alfred Lothar Wegener Continents are slowly drifting around the Earth and is once a large landmass called Pangaea, a Greek word which means "All Earth." WS #2 : Putting Back Together (Group Activity) Materials: Blank Sheet, phone with data
