Sustainable Development and Your Project When valuable natural resources are used for a project, there is always the underlying issue of sustainable development. A responsible member of the community must always ensure that his or her actions does not undermine humanity and the environment. He or she must consider the policies and principles of sustainable development when planning a project that makes use of natural resources. As such, he or she must ensure that: 1. Environmental integrity is maintained and that the health and security of others in the community and the life-sustaining ecosystems are ensured; 2. Social equity is not compromised and that the development of communities and respect for diversity are ensured; and 3. Economic efficiency is pursued hand in hand with ecological and social responsibility. Health and Safety Measures It is important to know the necessary precautions in order to have a successful project making. 1. Focus on the task. 2. Use working clothes or wear an apron. Make sure you wear something comfortable to make it easier to move around and perform the task. 3. Prepare all materials, tools, and equipment required before starting the project. 4. Place the equipment beyond the reach of younger children and keep your things orderly. 5. Read and follow carefully instructions on the use of chemicals. 6. Use safety goggles to protect the eyes from harsh chemicals. You may want to use a face protector, too, if needed. 7. Use appropriate tools for the task. 8. Avoid leaving the containers of glue, varnish, rugby, and other liquids uncovered. 9. Be careful in handling sharp objects in order to avoid injury. 10. Clean and keep the tools and equipment in their proper storage after using them. 11. Clean and wash your hands after working. 12. If ever you get hurt or injured, immediately inform the teacher so that you can be given first aid treatment. Packaging and Labelling Every product that is available in the market has its own distinct packaging and labelling. Packaging and labelling are important because they add to the "marketability" of the product. But what is marketability and why is it important? The word marketable, which in relation to buying and selling, refers to a product's sale- ability and fitness to be offered for sale in the market. In order to succeed in the market, your product must be competitive. That is why most companies invest time, effort, and resources on their product's packaging and labelling, to ensure that they are designed appropriately and that they are attractive and distinct. Packaging and labelling are usually considered a part of the overall "marketing strategy" to further promote a product. It may also be used in communicating the product's qualities to the consumers or clientele. According to Lamb, Hair, and McDaniel (2008), the three most important functions of packaging are: 1. contain and protect the product; 2. promote the product; and 3. facilitate the storage, use, and convenience of the product. They also made mention of a fourth function, which has increased in importance in recent years: to "facilitate recycling and reduce environmental damage." Labelling, on the other hand, serves the dual purpose of: 1. providing the necessary information about the product such as its contents, features, instructions as to its usage, manufacturing information, special care and safety in- formation, and the like; and 2. promoting the product with the use of branding, and attractive, colorful marks. Use of Technology to Market a Product Consumers nowadays spend most of their time surfing the Internet. Given the situation, entrepreneurs specifically use various social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram and other websites (e.g. OLX Philippines, Ayos Dito, Sulit) or applications (e.g. Viber, Facebook Messenger) to reach their consumers. With the help of these websites and applications, entrepreneurs are able to post pictures of their products for free by making a personal account. Transactions between the buyer and seller may be done using chat, call, or text. With today's technology, marketing of products is easily done by both the sellers and buyers who also make the products. More and more entrepreneurs use technology to market their product since it is more economical than having an actual store. Though it requires a gadget such as a computer or a smart phone and internet connection, marketing is more convenient and hassle-free with the use of technology. Computing for Earnings An entity that ventures into business has one ultimate goal: to earn profit. The continued existence of the business is highly dependent on the following factors. 1. ability to sell products and/or services; 2. ability to keep operating costs and expenses down while maintaining the quality of merchandise. REMEMBER Constructing a project plan is important not only to avoid wastage but also ensure market ability and saleability of the product. The assessment of the product is important before mass production. Resourcefulness and good management skills can help a person turn a business into a profitable venture.
